Kent Historical Society is a donor-supported nonprofit organization that operates the Seven Hearths Museum. Our mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and present the rich history of Kent as well as to provide educational and research material to enrich the public understanding of Kent’s artistic and cultural heritage. from July to October in 2017.

We're grateful to the young and engaged scholars at Kent School who helped us w**d and rake the gardens around Tallman House, our Administrative Offices. We even had time for a quick look-see of Seven Hearths! Thanks again, Kent School!

The Board of Trustees and staff of the Kent Historical Society is delighted to announce that we have been given a 2026 Award of Merit from the Connecticut League of Museums for "Homespun Kent Revolutionary Households. ”
The Connecticut League of Museums’ annual Awards of Merit recognize excellence in museum work by individuals and organizations here in Connecticut. Since 1950, the League has supported museums, historical societies, libraries, and other cultural heritage institutions like ours across the state. Through a partnership with the Public History program at Central Connecticut State University, the League unifies and strengthens our state’s museums and cultural resources to expand their capacity and community impact. We are honored by the distinction! And there's still time to see the exhibit, which remains on view until October 31.

Dear History Hikers,

Unfortunately, due to the weather forecast, the Kent Land Trust, Kent Historical Society and Kent Park and Recreation have made the difficult decision to cancel Sunday’s Hiking in History: Bulls Bridge Edition.

We’re sorry to miss this opportunity to explore the area with you, but we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are thinking about doing a series of History Hikes next year, including Bulls Bridge, Macedonia, the Avian Preserve in North Kent and the new trails at Emery Park. So stay tuned!

We were delighted to host the Sherman Historical Society yesterday; the Seven Hearths Store served as a filming location for their documentary currently in production, The Forgotten Signature. Directed by Eric Lake, members of the KHS community served as extras in our authentic 18th century store. It was an honor to contribute to this extraordinary project for our neighbors, and delighted to have such a strong partner in preservation.

Looking for something to do on a rainy day? I am William Samuel Johnson, and I will be at Seven Hearths from 11 to 4 today. I was literally in “The Room Where It Happened,” working closely with Alexander Hamilton when the Constitution was written, if you will pardon the pun. We crafted the final version together, though we often disagreed about some of the finer points. I also owned shares of the South Kent Iron Ore Bed, and built a house near Bulls Falls, which I rented to my friend Isaac Bull. Isaac and I built the early bridge over the river there, and some of my family members are buried in the Bulls Bridge cemetery. So come hear my story, and learn about the brave, hardworking Kent people who gave their all to the founding of our great country. I'm sure I knew some of them! And like many of them, my decision to turn against my King was not an easy one. It took time and some soul-searching thought. We enjoyed the last of our Makers' Series demos last Saturday when Debbis Shifflet-Fitton and Jo Mellis showed us how to spin yarn from raw wool. We enjoyed an authentic liberty cake and labrador tea as we ushered in the last weeks of our Homespun Kent: Revolutionary Households exhibit at Seven Hearths. See it before its too late! We can't wait to welcome you home to Seven Hearths...

Join us SATURDAY for a wool spinning demo while you sip a liberty tea! 1 -2:30 PM at 7 Hearths, 4 Studio Hill Road, Kent. Board Trustee Debbie Shifflet-Fitton will give a demonstration of spinning wool, the ancient craft of turning raw, wool fibers into continuous, usable yarn by drafting (stretching) and twisting them together. It is a highly meditative and creative process, allowing control of the thickness, color, and texture of one’s own unique yarn for knitting, crochet, or weaving. This act is at the heart of our summer exhibit, Homespun Kent: Revolutionary Households, metaphoric, and a powerful symbol of independence: making the yarn for the fabric our own nation.
