Kent State University offers a master’s degree in ethnomusicology that allows students to select from three tracks designed to meet their post-graduate needs and interests:
Track 1, Research: Students interested in applying for Ph.D. programs following the completion of a master’s degree will conduct original research culminating in a major thesis.
Track 2, Public Sector Work: Students interested in public sector work will qualify for a master’s degree based on the completion of a professional internship at one of Northeast Ohio’s cultural institutions such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Track 3, Creative Capstone Project: Students interested in primary and secondary education or in performance may create a capstone project showcasing their teaching, outreach, and/or performance skills.
Kent State University ethnomusicology graduates have continued on to Ph.D. programs at leading institutions such as the University of California, Indiana University, University of Illinois, Florida State University and the University of Pittsburgh. They have found work at the Library of Congress and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have been awarded prestigious Fulbright fellowships.
The ethnomusicology program at Kent State University boasts the first and one of the only Thai music ensembles in the United States. In addition, students can participate in the Steel Ensemble, the Chinese Ensemble, or the African Ensemble. Our faculty members specialize in the musics of Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
