Twenty-five years ago, I lived in a small city called Gambella, Ethiopia. At that time, I was very young and, the journey to water was difficult. I suffered with many woman and girls who made the two hour trek to the pond every day. We often walked in temperatures of 100+ degrees, while we kept watch for the many wild animals that could harm (or kill) us. We had to take this arduous journey three

times a day. In February of 2021, I finally made it back home. It had been a very long time since I had seen my family, and when I woke my first morning there, my stomach was full of butterflies - I was so excited. On that morning, I looked for water to wash my face with or to take a shower, but there was no water to be found. I was shocked and heartbroken to find that my family, and the entire community, has suffered and struggled all this time (without access to clean, running water.

For years, the people of Bentiu have faced a dire water crisis, with many forced to rely on contaminated sources for their daily needs. In the northern part of Bentiu, young girls can be seen fetching drinking water from floodwaters mixed with oil waste—an unsettling reminder of the dangerous reality they endure. The unclean water exposes communities to severe health risks, while the ongoing lack of access to safe water deepens their struggle for survival. Due to Severe Food Shortage

We urgently call for your intervention in the critical situation in Malou (Kiechkuon), where the ongoing food shortage has displaced many civilians. The residents are facing severe hardship, with people scattered in the bush to collect wild fruits and tree leaves in order to survive. Some have even migrated to Khorwakow in search of food.

As shown in the attached images, the situation has become unbearable. We kindly ask for your immediate attention to assess and address the dire needs of the community. Additionally, we urge you to coordinate with the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide much-needed food supplies to the affected people.

Your leadership is crucial in this moment of crisis. Please, help us rescue the lives of the civilians in Malou.
