Kent American Legion Post 15 is one of the largest and most active veteran service organizations (VSO) in the Seattle area. Post 15 was established in 1919 and is located on heavily wooded acreage carved from Kent’s Mill Creek Park.

Various VSOs, including Post 15, collaborate to render military honors at Tahoma National Cemetery, one of 155 VA sites located in 42 states. Post 15 is assigned the first, third, and fifth Wednesday of every month. Photos are from a typical service circa 2021.

Sergeant at Arms Robert “Bob” Christophersen leads the Post 15 honor guard, including live bugler, Jack Dayton. His repertoire includes Taps, the various service songs, and Amazing Grace.

The cemetery operates with military precision. Arrive on time. Duration of the service is limited to 30 minutes in any of the three assigned shelters. The M-1 Garand rifles and blank rounds are provided to each unit by the U.S. Army. The M-1 Garand was the primary service rifle of World War II and Korea, but are now considered ceremonial.

The price of admission to a national cemetery is a DD Form 214 affirming honorable service in any U. S. military branch. The funeral director makes the arrangements with the central VA office. Spouses are included for burial; however, non-serving spouses do not receive military honors.
