350 Montgomery County - Maryland

350 Montgomery County - Maryland We are a group of Montgomery Co. activists working towards solutions to the climate crisis. Let's make MoCo sell off its $112M in oil & coal investments!

350 Montgomery County is a local group affiliate of the international nonprofit 350.org. To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of over 400 parts per million to below 350 ppm. Join us to say YES to a clean energy future and NO to climate destruction! The Montgomery County Employee Retirement System (MCERS) pension fund h

as invested over $112M in 71 of the top 200 oil & gas and coal companies, including notable bad actors Exxon Mobil, Chevron and Arch Coal Company. Help us pass legislation to require MCERS to stop investment in the top 200 fossil fuel companies and sell off its existing fossil fuel investments over the next 5 years. Respected institutions like public pension funds and colleges need to publicly break from companies whose "business plan" is to produce as much fossil fuel as they can, despite knowing that inevitably would lead to dangerous climate change. Divestment will loosen the grip the fossil fuel industry has on our political system, finally making a price on carbon and rapidly transitioning to clean, renewable power possible.

Public opposition is mounting over the large water, and electricity demands and other strains that Data Centers, often the size of warehouses, place on communities.

Join The Climate Mobilization (a member of the Climate Coalition in MoCo) this Thursday, May 21 at 7:30–8:30pm to discuss Data Center zoning, regulations currently being reviewed by the MoCo Council and how this will affect the hyperscale data center proposed for Dickerson, MD.

We need to ensure there are limits to data center locations and their impact on county residents, including the oversized use of energy and water. Learn about the issues and how we can ensure our councilmembers put county residents first.

Speakers will discuss :
● What are the pending zoning and regulatory actions
● How to improve these actions to protect MoCo residents
● How you can help ensure residents' priorities are placed first

Another successful "Keep Winter Cold Plunge” for the climate -underwent by our solo polar bear, Jim McGee!!!!

350MoCo thanks those who contributed. Because of the catastrophic sewage spill upstream from our normal plunge location, Chesapeake Climate Action Network changed the event to being a clever gauntlet of sprinklers, water blasters, and an ice water bucket bath.

With your help, the 350 MoCo raised $2,843 to promote progressive climate policies. And it's not too late to donate if you haven't already: https://give.chesapeakeclimate.org/p2p/site/mjSJ2/page/bJSPaW #/

We recently had a productive and fun postcard writing party to support the Affordable Solar Act in this year's Maryland General Assembly (HB0345 and SB034). The federal administration’s antagonism towards the clean energy industry attempts to destabilize the market and WILL cause utility bills to rise across the nation. This bill is designed to fight back against these changes.

Click on this constituent sign-on and let your state legislators that you urge passage of The Affordable Solar Act: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeWAR7fIWdOxC2kQAvfouXWg7IM1n-uv-Ukw1Khu3zlap1qUg/viewform

We mourn the loss but celebrate the life and legacy of the incredible Dave Mott who passed away this past Friday, December 12th. David Mott had a long beautiful career as a labor and social justice activist and mentor. For 350MoCo, Dave used his tremendous background in the labor movement to help bring unions into the fight for a livable climate.

There were several organizations that relied on his wisdom and support including but not limited to the Maryland chapter of the Poor People's Campaign (leadership role), the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition (on the Board), and the Maryland chapter of Third Act (leadership role). Dave was also a gifted guitar player and singer who often showed up at meetings prepared to lead the group in song. Please consider getting involved in one of these nonprofits as a way of honoring Dave’s legacy.

Please consider donating to an environmental group today - its a very underfunded cause. This article can help you get the most bang for your buck, so to speak. Another idea is to give to the planet by giving to yourself - Gernot Wagner, a climate economist at Columbia Business School, calculates that the most effective investment in the climate involves decarbonizing your home.

I asked economists and climate philanthropists what they could teach people like me, whose Giving Tuesday donations may only have one or two zeros behind them.
