Ready to make Independent Living skills achievable and measurable right now?

We've crafted a set of Transition IEP goals using the IDEA Method that focus exclusively on skills students can master in the classroom to prepare for life after high school.

𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔 - which stands for Impactful, Defined, Easy, and Actionable allows educators and families to build critical adult competencies with school support.

This approach targets three core areas. We focus on Self-Monitoring by having students practice multi-step classroom routines using simple checklists, ensuring they build habits for future employment. We address Technology Navigation by having students use bus route simulator apps in class to learn planning and fare management, eliminating the stress of real-world mistakes. Finally, we target Executive Function by teaching students to log and prioritize assignments and appointments in a digital calendar, a crucial skill for managing their time in college or on the job.

By focusing on these measurable, school-guided steps, we ensure every student gains the independence they need for a successful transition!

Ready to write Career and Vocational Goals that truly make a difference in your student's future? We're moving beyond vague objectives with our newly refined IDEA Method for Transition IEP goals!

This powerful framework focuses on building specific, long-term skills to ensure success after high school. IDEA stands for: Impactful, Defined, Easy, and Actionable. For example, a goal to improve Work Routines is Impactful because mastering the three steps (sort, stack, and file) is critical for job success; it's Easy because a simple picture checklist is provided; and it's Actionable because the outcome is becoming a more independent employee.

For Job Interview Skills, the goal is Defined by focusing on clearly answering the three core questions (Tell me about yourself, Why do you want this job, and What are your strengths?); this skill is Impactful because it leads to securing job offers.

By using the IDEA Method, we shift the focus to positive, clear, and manageable actions, giving every student a solid roadmap for their post-secondary career vision.

The key to succeeding after high school is learning to be your own champion. That means taking Leadership by understanding the student is the primary client, solely responsible for initiating contact and leading all communication with Disability Services (DS) and faculty, which is necessary for true independence.

Effective Communication involves students proactively meeting with professors early in the semester to share the official accommodation letter and confidently discuss how those supports will be implemented in the course. Success relies heavily on Deadlines, so registering with DS and submitting documentation must happen before the semester starts, followed by delivering the approved accommodation letter to every professor within the first week. Finally, knowing how to approach Resolution means first reaching out to the professor if an accommodation is not being honored, and then promptly escalating the issue to the DS coordinator if it persists.

The rules of support change dramatically after high school, and preparing for college or a career starts with understanding the laws!

The system shifts from IDEA, which aims for student success, to the ADA and Section 504, which only ensure equal access to programs. This means the young adult must now proactively self-identify as having a disability and advocate for their own necessary accommodations.

Crucially, College Disability Services only provides accommodations for equal access and will not fundamentally alter the academic standard or essential curriculum by granting modifications. Additionally, the student, not the college, is responsible for providing current and comprehensive medical documentation from a qualified professional to substantiate their need for support.

Finally, the student must actively engage with the DS coordinator to discuss their barriers and needs, a required process that builds crucial self-advocacy skills for adult life.

Don't navigate college barriers alone! Securing academic accommodations is a vital process that ensures an equitable learning environment, but the steps are different from high school.

Here is the essential roadmap: Start by voluntarily self-identifying your disability to the college. Next, contact the central office known as Disability Services. You'll need to complete their registration application with all personal details. Crucially, you must submit documentation from a qualified professional. This paperwork must state your specific diagnosis. It also must clearly detail your academic impact and barriers.

Remember, high school plans are helpful but not sufficient! The next step is a required intake consultation to finalize needed supports. Upon approval, you will receive your official letter authorizing the accommodations. Your responsibility is to share this letter directly with each professor. Finally, be sure to renew your accommodations every semester to continue support.
