To those who see me as confrontational: I am guilty as charged. Why?

Because I believe our society is grossly unfair - to poor people, to black people, to people with less education and those who don’t use the “right” words and haven’t “arrived.“ I center that understanding in all that I do and work towards. Because I believe the greatest source of inequality is and has always been between those who have money and those who don’t.

Because I believe deeply that we can overcome our limitations and prejudices by coming together in person, in fairness, in recognition of current and past injustice, and a commitment to make things right. If we work together we can preserve the best of our history and traditions, while fostering the world we want to live in.

Because I know the “red v. blue” game is being played against us. Authoritarians are happy to assume whatever costume would advance their power and control over us. And I refuse to participate in the game. Looking for answers on high, whatever the color of the jersey, is a fool’s errand.

Because I believe that honesty breeds trust, and trust creates love. By the same token, love enables us to trust and be honest with each other. I used to think there was a balancing act between honesty and empathy. I was wrong - each requires the other.

Because I sense at this important juncture that we - both here and throughout our country - have too little honesty and too much that pretends to be love and justice. And because, far from rejecting our history and traditions, I believe they will lead us back together.

If I speak too strongly on behalf of these ideas, so be it.

When and why did Pete and I start farming? We didn't do it to to make money. Far from it - because who in their right mind could even think of earning a living that way?

We always understood that is our job: to feed each other, our friends and family, as people have been doing for millennia.

So let's just forget the "business" of growing food. Those who say there is not enough food for all of us haven't even tried to feed each other. As my amazing mother used to say: "Don't try. Do it."

Yeah, you're going to have to get your hands dirty, but not like Jeffrey Epstein. Go ahead, talk dirt to me. I'm ready. Most of what you grow will go to friends you haven't met yet.

Here's how it went down: Pete and I started our summer 2020 open air concerts because our family vacation was canceled and we thought: there is no reason to be afraid! How hard could it be to gather musicians to play in an open field, with the wind blowing?

Here's what we DID worry about: every musician we knew was completely shut out of any possibility of earning a living. No music festivals. No bar gigs. No weddings, no NOTHING. We thought: what a waste to live and die in fear. We can just listen together. And that's how this farm was born - it arrived with a musical fanfare.

At the end of one of those first twelve concerts in the summer of 2020, someone asked: "Hey, where's your CSA?" That was when we got serious about growing food. We learned how to do it because we knew we would need to feed each other - literally and spiritually.

Dear friends,

We are living through difficult times - replete with sorrow, struggle, deception and disappointment. I haven't heard anyone say recently how joyful they are. Why is that? Is not suffering part of the human condition? Is it not our birthright? Joseph Campbell made me aware of the meaning of compassion: com(with)+passion(suffering). Agreeing to suffer together is one of the greatest gifts we can offer each other.

Regardless of whether you're a Jew, Christian, Atheist, Buddhist,
Agnostic - or none of the above - winter gives us a gift of opportunity - indeed the necessity - to slow down and reflect. To think about all that we have, our memento mori, and what we CAN do. That phrase "can-do" that lifts our vision beyond our personal problems to see how much love surrounds us every single day. That inspires us bring our best efforts and energy to replenish the world. Not least, to accept grace and forgiveness for our limitations and failings.

Let us all give thanks for the divine in each other, at this holy time of Christmas.

With gratitude,
Karen

CJ Hopkins is an author, playwright and satirist who is under fire in Germany for saying things we might agree with, but which can never be said out loud.

He is visiting Crows' Feat Farm as the last stop on his tour through the USA - billed as "A Stranger in a Strange Homeland"
It feels like we are all strangers now, at least to each other.

However, we at Crows' Feat Farm believe that recognition, satire and forgiveness might - if given a chance - help us all get along.
There is no charge for this event. If you would like to attend, please write to [email protected] with CJ in the title. Attendance is limited to 50 people
