No license, no car, and a bus route that stops running before second shift ends.

The appointments that decide whether a man stays free are scattered across two counties, and missing one is not a small thing. So we drive.

Last month that meant rides to work and back. To a job interview, and later to orientation for the same job. To a drug test. And once, out of a shelter and into a house.

Dine in or hit the drive-through and tell them you're there for the New Song fundraiser. Culver's gives 15 percent back to New Song Ministries. Gift cards count too, so it's a good night to stock up for Christmas. App and online orders don't count.

HOPES Center is very pleased to announce that it has received a grant award for its Street Outreach work from the Racine Community Foundation. Recognizing the worth and dignity of each person, HOPES helps people end their homelessness. The Racine Community Foundation plays a big role in our ability to do this.

Street Outreach is a service specifically for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Racine County, meaning that they sleep "on the streets" in places not meant for human habitation. HOPES has small street outreach teams that go out a 3 - 4 nights per week to meet people where are on the streets. The people our teams meet either cannot or choose not to enter shelter or temporary housing for a wide variety of reasons. The teams provide basic assistance, information on services available in Racine, and offer connections and assistance in finding a path off the streets and out of homelessness. We are extremely grateful for the foundation's partnership in helping us do that.

We need more people who show up.

The work is mostly presence. Being somewhere at a set time, on a regular basis, for longer than feels interesting. A ride to an appointment. A seat at the table on Sunday evening. A phone that gets picked up.

Almost none of it requires training you do not already have, and we provide what you do need. What you bring is the willingness to still be there in the third month, which is the part most people find hard.

We will be at Greater Grace Temple this Saturday for Community Care Day, from 11:00 to 2:00.

If you have wondered what New Song actually is, this is the easiest way to find out. No appointment and no form. Walk up to the table and ask whatever you want to ask.

If you know a man coming home to Racine or Kenosha county, take a resource card. If you have been thinking about volunteering with us, come say so in person. That conversation goes better across a table than through a website.

This page is how we tell people what is happening here, and right now not many people see it. Two things help more than anything else you could do for us.
