Some trips are large affairs with lots of Scouts and some trips are just parents and sons and that leads to some amazing opportunities to learn and grow.
This last weekend six of us headed off to traverse the miles between Cape Alava and Shi-Shi Beach.
One of the things we learned about this week was the different types of fun. Day 1 was Type 1 fun, the fun that is enjoyable when the activity was taking place. The incredible views and weather and the beaches that changed substrates with every headland. From sand to pebbles to cobbles to boulders to intertidal zones, it changed from moment to moment.
Day 2 started as Type 1 fun until about 6:00 pm when we weren't able to make it around a headland due to tides. This is when we learned about Type 2 fun. Type 2 fun is fun that is pretty terrible in the moment and later you realize that the challenge made you grow. Our Type 2 fun was bushwacking a mile through an old growth forest to a trail-in-name-only .... in the dark.
Day 3 reverted to Type 1 fun after the morning fight with trail finding and making our way through salmon berry bushes. I am incredibly proud of the Scouts and parents that persevered through these tough outings, it is these things that continue to shape us.
Overall the weather was amazing and the views were incredible, we live in an amazing place that gives us the opportunity to do such things.
