At this year’s Freedom’s Table, on the beautiful campus of , SUNDAY June 23, we have a culinary line up that will have you SMACKING your lips all the way home. Featuring a storytelling virtuosa and live band.

Featured Storyteller: Deb Freeman
Deb Freeman is an award-winning writer and the creative force behind Setting the Table, a critically acclaimed podcast exploring Black foodways. Recognized by Apple Podcasts and lauded by Texas Monthly, Setting the Table earned Deb the podcast of the year award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals in 2023.

Featured Chef: Leah Branch
Leah honed her craft before stepping into the spotlight as Executive Chef at Moonrakers in Beaufort, North Carolina. Her culinary prowess has garnered attention far and wide, earning her features in prestigious publications such as the New York Times and a coveted spot in Style Weekly’s esteemed top 40 under 40 list. Leah brings her expertise to The Roosevelt, where she enthusiastically explores and celebrates regional foodways, captivating diners with each inspired dish.

Featured Chef: Chris Scott
is an acclaimed Chef, Author, and Restauranteur. A Chester county native, his culinary journey spans over 30 years, marked by prestigious roles in five diamond restaurants. To Commemorate Juneteenth across our region June 21 - 23, 2024 along with this year’s theme Journey to Freedom: The Fredrick Douglass Chronicles.

Kicking off the weekend on Friday June 21, 2024, Voices Underground is proud to present Frederick Douglass Jazz Works—a discussion and jazz performance comprised of vocalist and composer Ruth Naomi Floyd’s original compositions paired with words from Douglass’s speeches and writings—in the Open Air Theater

Illustrated through the art form of jazz improvisational music, the performance illuminates the themes of tragedy, grief, despair, and injustice of American slavery but through the multi-faceted prism of hope, joy, perseverance, and triumph-all with Floyd’s soaring mezzo-soprano voice.

We are so excited to keep the holiday weekend celebrations going tomorrow! We will be bringing out the charcoal grill for a great Burger or Hot Dog Special (while supplies last), we’ve got the great new Mango Frozen Daiquiri restocked, a blow out sale in the Bark Barn - and Group Therapy bringing the tunes!

Last night our Co-Executive Director, Gregory Thompson, had the privilege of speaking at the United Way of Southern Chester County’s VIP Reception. There, he shared the amazing story of Nathaniel Green and the whiskey company, Uncle Nearest. At face value, Uncle Nearest is a black-owned whiskey company, but their story is so much deeper. Their story is one of pride and excellence, and had unfortunately been buried for over a hundred years. Now, the story of Nathaniel Green and his extraordinary distilling ability is publicized and shared by the Uncle Nearest company. Thank you UWSCC for letting us share his magnificent story.

Join us on Sunday, June 18th for Freedoms Table: Glory and Ashes, a Barbecue Feast with Chef Shadee, and fireside chat with Kimberly McGlonn and Greg Thompson. This event will celebrate the way African Americans have, in area from food to fashion--taken the little that was made available to them and created some of the most beautiful, sustainable, and meaningful aspects of American culture.

Join us Saturday, June 17th at the as we gather with friends, family, and community members in honor of Juneteenth with a delightful fusion of flavors, sounds, and experiences. The evening will include a lecture from Pitmaster, Russ Whitfield exploring BBQ cooking and how this great American art can help us to find our way back to one another. Following the lecture, there will be a captivating Wine Tasting, curated by Blacoak, where you'll have the opportunity to savor a curated selection of exquisite black-owned wines from across the country and later on enjoy a soulful musical performace by local band, Group Therapy.
