Lesley's Place Providing medical care for homeless dogs with mammary tumors

09/15/2025

GREAT NEWS! Petunia was accepted into Lesley’s Place program for shelter/rescue pets with mammary masses and had her surgery. The pathology on the mass came back BENIGN!!!

Lesley’s Place is a vital resource for shelters and rescues but the research they do on dog mammary masses also helps with research for human breast cancer as the tumors are so similar in how they grow and spread. We love that this can help animals and humans!

Just as a reminder, Finding Shelter Animal Rescue is committed to taking care of all medical needs, no matter how big or costly, even with our limited resources, so we adopt out the healthiest animals possible and can disclose to adopters everything we know. We don’t want an adopter to have a brand new dog with mountains of medical costs if we can avoid putting that burden on them. Of we know about It, we take care of It!

Thanks to Lesley’s Place, Petunia’s diagnostics and surgery costs were fully covered and now this great news gets our weekend off to the BEST start!

Featured case. May 3rd was a day to celebrate. It was Lulabelle’s 1 year anniversary after surgery for her mammary tumor. Her restaging diagnostics found her to be in remission, NED (no evidence of disease). For dogs with mammary tumor the one-year mark is a milestone, and Lulabelle has made it, much to the joy and relief of everyone who knows her and loves her. And Lulabelle has a family who loves her very much. Things have changed so much for her over the past year since she was homeless and hopeless with a large mammary tumor and in desperate need of care. But with the help of a local rescue devoted to helping dogs like Lulabelle she found her way to Lesley’s Place and a new family. Life is good for Lulabelle, and we are grateful we were able to help her and be part of her care.
