Honoring Volunteer Mark Hale
Our Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park family is deeply saddened to share the passing of longtime volunteer Mark Hale — a dedicated interpreter, mentor, and friend whose contributions shaped the visitor experience at KEMO for decades.
Since 1979, Mark brought exceptional skill, authenticity, and heart to 19th‑century artillery interpretation. His demonstrations, especially his Civil War knapsack display, connected visitors to the lived experience of soldiers and made history feel tangible, personal, and unforgettable.
Mark also traveled with our KEMO artillery crew to several National Park Service Civil War sites, including Andersonville, Vicksburg, Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Stones River. At each park, he shared his expertise, strengthened partnerships, and brought the same commitment to accuracy, safety, and public education that made him a trusted figure across the NPS community.
Beyond his interpretive excellence, Mark was a source of kindness, humor, and steady leadership. He mentored countless volunteers and helped ensure the traditions of the artillery crew endured. His legacy continues through all those he guided — especially his son, Robert, who proudly carries forward Mark’s tradition of service at KEMO.
Mark Hale’s impact is immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed.
