The clients at our vision clinics go through a series of vision screening tests and when warranted get fitted for appropriate prescription eye glasses. They are always so grateful for their new clear vision.

Yesterday we conducted another Vision Clinic at Bucker Internationals Villa Hermosa Family Hope Center in Peru. We tested over 85 people and were privileged to provide dozens of these individuals with prescription eyeglasses. These people varied widely by age, but not in need for clear vision.

Thanks for your continued support!

We had the opportunity to visit several village primary schools for clean water projects. We met with officials at each location, learned about the source from which each school gets its supply of water, inspected the distribution points, and tested samples of the water. Contrary to the USA, kids in these public schools in Tanzania wear uniforms and are required to clean their classrooms at the end of each school day. One little boy was so excited to show us the art of making paper airplanes!

After summiting the mountain, it was time to start planning for the vision work we will do here in Kilimanjaro. We met with KCCO, Kilimanjaro Center for Community Ophthalmology, to figure out how we can best assist them with the work they are doing 24 / 7 on the ground here. Our model continues to be partnering with organizations who are working in communities on a daily basis and are best able to assess the needs of those they are serving. We are thrilled there is a great fit between our organizations and are looking forward to working with KCCO.

The Roof of Africa! We woke up at 11:00 pm (after just 3 hours of sleep) put on layer after layer, had a bit of porridge, and began our final ascent to Uhuru peak at midnight. It took approximately 7 hours hiking up the mountain in pitch darkness to finally reach the peak. The night sky with all its shooting stars kept us going in the bitter cold. We passed Stella Point and Crater Rim along the way. What a sight to be standing on the roof of Africa at sunrise! We dedicate this journey to all those who thirst for clean water and dare to hope for clear vision.

This fundraiser campaign ends in just a couple of days. All dollar amounts make a difference! Would you consider forgoing one Starbucks or maybe a fast food meal and instead making a donation? Here's the link:

We are ascending "pole, pole" (pronounced polay which is Swahili for slowly) but in long days of hiking.

By the end of day two we reached over 12,000 feet elevation and were above the clouds! Vegetation is rapidly changing, and there are huge obsidian rocks everywhere. Since Tanzania is south of the equator it is winter here and temps are rapidly dropping the higher we climb.

On day three we continued the methodology of climbing high and sleeping low in order to acclimatize, reaching 15,000 feet at lava tower and then descending for camp.

Day four started with climbing the Great Barranco Wall, dubbed the "Great Breakfast Wall" because so many recently eaten breakfasts end up on the wall! At one point we hugged a huge volcanic rock as we made our way around it on a tiny ledge. Thrilling and terrifying all at once.

Chef Nuru is preparing amazing meals for us, and we are having fun huddled in our tents in the evenings learning some Tanzanian card games. Our team is suffering some altitude headaches and nausea, but we are thankful that our symptoms are relatively mild compared to some other groups climbing around us. This is hard. Really hard.

There is still time to donate to our fundraiser for clean water and clear vision projects

The trek began at Machame gate with the goal being Uhuru Peak! We have an incredible team and are thankful for their guidance and assistance as we begin this journey. Immediately we were in the rain forest region and hiking pretty steep trails to the first campsite. The forest is just like pictures or movies - lush and very green. We were glad to crawl into our tents after a strenuous day of hiking.

Still missing all of our checked luggage (all equipment and gear), so there was a limit to what we could accomplish today. We went to Moshi town for a few hours and saw some pretty cool things. There are people working right along the street sewing beautiful garments and women carrying all sorts of heavy loads balanced on their heads. We stopped at an old coffee union for a some of the best "Joe" on the planet and even visited a coffee plantation. And we got a first-hand peak at that monster we plan to summit by next week!! We remain hopeful that tonight's flight will carry our luggage ...

The Buena Amistad soup kitchen feeds several hundred people each day in this mostly elderly community. In addition, many in the community cannot afford to purchase even the badly contaminated water that is for sale in their neighborhood, so they come to this kitchen and fill jugs to carry back to their homes. Now the kitchen finally has a continuous supply of clean safe water!

Take a look at the picture where we are training the ladies who work in the kitchen. Notice the black cord going up to the window --- that's where the solar panel is mounted. See the white cord going to the chair that is between the desk and the tank --- that's where the battery that runs the electrolysis system is located. The battery is continuously charged by the trickle solar panel! In other words, the system needs nothing but regular table salt to provide sustainable clean water for this community!

We're pretty pumped about that!!
