The New School Where Students Find Their Voice The New School is a state approved, democratic, community-based private high school in Kennebunk, Maine.

We keep our student-teacher ratio low, classes are hands-on, and students have opportunities to work on independent projects, apprenticeships, and intensive travel studies. All classes align to the Maine Learning Results, and we find fun, engaging, and creative ways to educate our students' mind, body, AND spirit. High school can look different.

At The New School, students have a real voice in their education. Learning can happen through conversation, projects, exploration, individual interests, and experiences that extend beyond a traditional classroom.

There isn’t one right way to learn — and there isn’t one “type” of student who belongs here.

Students are encouraged to be themselves, explore what matters to them, and take ownership of their education while continuing to grow and be challenged.

A new school year starts today. 💛

We’re excited to welcome students back to TNS for another year of learning, exploring, creating, questioning, and growing together.

The first week is all about reconnecting, getting oriented, building community, and starting the year with a little adventure along the way.

It's a bit quiet during the summer at The New School. We were just chatting about the fantastic showing we had for May's Spring Fever Fest. Leah, the parent of one of our students, organized the effort spending weeks getting ready for our annual spring gardening show—an amazing amount of effort that we are so very thankful for!

On hand were Eden Acres Family Farm—Ali from the orchard had a selection of bath and body care products, Jessica from Mountainview Bees hosted information about beekeeping. Also attending were the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners program with a booth with gardening info. Michelle Draghetti of In Harmony Homeopathy & Attunement offered a collection of homeopathies and flower essences. Marylyn from Neverdun Farm hosted a herbal tea booth with tea and plants for sale. Our local Ben & Jerry's came by with ice cream and TNS offered freshly-squeezed lemonade and pizza slices from our brick pizza oven!

We had a fantastic day and can't wait for next year's event!

Have you checked out our little library recently? We've been rotating the stock all year long. As a bonus, after the road reconstruction on York Street, the town moved the pedestrian crosswalk to right in front of the library box! Come by and grab a book or three; drop off a book or two.

Bonus: We've added bookmarks from our friends at Octopus Bookshop to a few books.

June 13th—a beautiful Saturday for a graduation! The New School's Class of 2026 was celebrated by over 70 guests as the community came out to cheer on Kaden, Phoenix, Quinn, and Sela. A fantastic day to start off exciting futures for our now-alums! The New School is so proud of our four graduates and we can't wait to see what great things they accomplish in the years to come. Congratulations to our class of '26!

We're still recovering from all the fun we had at Pride Portland last weekend — take a look at some of the folks who came by our photo booth on Saturday: visitors, alums, and more! We had former teachers, enthusiastic supporters, friends, and smiling faces all around. It was certainly a hit and we are looking forward to Pride Portland 2027!
