Did you know?: The American Religious Identity Survey (ARIS) places the number of Buddhists in 2004 at about 1.5 million, or 0.5 percent of the US population (roughly the same as for Muslims), an increase of about 170 percent since 1960. The BuddhaNet website (sponsored by the Buddha Dharma Education Association) lists Buddhist centers in every state and every Canadian province. The appeal of Buddhism to Westerners doubtless has much to do with its generally tolerant, inclusive culture, its emphasis on moral achievement over doctrinal adherence, and its promise of psychological wholeness. The political plight of Tibet and the notoriety of the Dalai Lama (who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989) have also helped create a favorable climate for Buddhism.

Question: According to Buddhist teaching on Nirvana, does Nirvana fulfill or extinguish the deepest human longings? For the answer, read below:

“Nirvana is the only hope, and it is a state without desire; the combustion of human desire, which causes suffering, has been snuffed out forever. It is not a state in which the deepest human longings have been fulfilled but one in which they have all been extinguished.”

“Lord, give me Your heart for the nations. A heart of love and compassion for the lost. A renewed love of the gospel and a deep admiration and concern for those who already are giving their lives in service to You. Provide for them, encourage them, prosper their work, and embolden their hearts. Raise up and equip more workers for Your harvest fields. Fill them with Your Spirit, deliver them from the evil one, and empower them to boldly proclaim and represent You and Your Word to the world until You return. Help me be obedient to Your voice and do my part in advancing Your kingdom on earth. In Jesus’ name I pray.”

Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

What causes fear and worry in our lives? What causes weakness and unsteadiness?

Being alone.

The feeling of loneliness—that it’s just us versus the world—causes all our fears and worries. We know we can’t do it alone. We know we are helpless when we see the forces rise up against us.

So what can take away our loneliness that causes our fear and worry? Relationship.

Knowing that someone is there for us, watching our backs, picking us up when we stumble, fighting off the attackers, protecting us from harm.

God promises to be there with us. We don’t have to be dismayed unless we refuse His companionship. He’s right there reaching out His hand. Take it and fear no more.”

“We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.“ Psalm 33:20-22

One of the best ways to love someone is to pray for them.
