Save Calusa update April 23: BCC voted 8-5 to approve the Calusa development of 524 homes on land designated parks and rec. We are so thankful to everyone for all the support. We are proud of how far we have come, and in particular for the rookery protections achieved. The birds thank you.

Save Calusa Update! Hearing Thurs 9am at Stephen P Clark and Save Calusa said NO to a settlement deal with GL Homes. Though the rookery protections were improved, they were not offering a significant reduction in density or related impacts to resident quality of life. Thursday we find out if our commissioners take action on resident concerns, or prioritize a developer’s proposal to rezone parks and rec land to allow for a luxury private million dollar home development.

Final Calusa Hearing: Please come Thursday April 23 downtown to Stephen P Clark and wear your green save calusa shirt! We need to show the commission our community will continue to advocate to protect our community and quality of life!

Ultimately, Save Calusa did NOT sign a settlement agreement with GL Homes. We couldn’t separate the wildlife protections from resident density, traffic and quality of life concerns.

Calusa update:

At the February 19 Calusa zoning hearing, our community showed up strong! Specoal thanks to Attorney David Winker for representing us.

We’re proud to share that the county commission deferred the application and made it clear to the developer: go back, make meaningful concessions, and work with the community. This is progress.

Our voices were heard. Concerns about density, traffic, wildlife and habitat were taken seriously. The commission directed the developer to work with us on changes that better reflect what our community has been asking for. This isn’t the end, but it’s an important step forward.

Thank you to everyone who attended, spoke, emailed, called and supported our advocacy. Stay tuned! We’ll keep you updated on next steps.
