What do you do when your bed is about the only place you can be during a flare?

Apparently... you wash wool.

When my brain and hands decide that most crafty projects aren't happening today, I look for something a little less demanding.

Round one of Catniss's fleece is washed and lying out to dry. Round two is soaking now.

There's something about her wool that I love. It's a rich black with hints of reddish-brown running through it, and I can't wait to see it transformed all the way from raw fleece to handspun yarn.

If all goes well, maybe next winter I'll be wearing a pair of wool arm warmers made entirely from one of our own sheep.

Some days progress looks like checking off a dozen projects. Other days it looks like washing wool from a chair.

Today I did something I haven't done in eons.

Cheesecake!

But not for me.

Bourbon Caramel Maple Pecan Cheesecake for Father's Day. Because what do you get the man that has everything?

Complete with a tub of homemade goats milk Candied Pecan ice cream.

At 85, I think he deserves a delicious dessert he can share with his friends.

I was surprised it didn't crack. It's been a LONG time since I've baked. And this has been a reminder why I don't bake anymore...

That sauce is freaking addicting. She's chilling in the fridge now.

Tomorrow will be a busy day at the Rec Center! Be sure to bring the kiddos along for the various activities!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Update 2: All arrived dead....
Update: They've been found!!! They're in Kenai!

Is there anyone in Anchorage I can authorize to pickup my pheasant chicks from the USPS distribution center and run them to Grant Aviation???

They're stuck. After being stuck in ST Paul for too long.

The Anchorage people didn't move them for the single delivery to Kenai today.

Grr

Well, if I have enough room in the truck, Zelda, my escape artist bottle baby, will be joining me at the Farmers Market.

Everyone can meet her. She's a sweetheart.

And Freyja is enjoying the new bunnies.

Please bear with me and read to the end. There's a pretty exciting bit of information there for anyone with livestock.

Today started out rough.

Honestly, I hate stepping outside right now because Obsidian's cries are heartbreaking. She is beside herself over losing Flint and wants absolutely nothing to do with my attempts to comfort her.

I can't imagine what she's going through. My heart broke for both of them when I found him this morning.

If I had a bottle baby on hand, I'd be tempted to see if she'd take it. Unfortunately, that's one of the downsides of having such a small herd. My only hope is that maybe, just maybe, one of Catniss's twins decides Obsidian looks like a good milk bar and the two form some kind of bond.

Something tells me Catniss wouldn't be terribly upset by that arrangement.

After everything this morning, I needed a break to clear my head. Anyone who knows me knows how much I adore babies, and sudden losses like this are never easy.

So I headed out to Nikolaevsk to pick up some rabbits.

The drive gave me time to process everything and enjoy the absolutely stunning views of the inlet.
It was a long drive, but well worth it.

Then I got home and discovered Zelda out AGAIN.
That little goat is, at minimum, a four-times-a-day escape artist.

At this point she's about one fence jump away from winning the battle and being promoted to full-time yard goat, as long as she stays away from the road.

Honestly, she might end up coming with me to the farmers market. She's clearly all about exploring the world, meeting people, and grazing every square inch of available grass.

Now for the good news.

If you own livestock and are looking for processing this fall, listen up.

Whitney Holiday is taking butchering appointments starting September 1st and plans to continue through the winter.

Even better, she is offering free or discounted processing in exchange for protein donations to Eden's Edge!

You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard that.

Whitney has been an incredible friend, advocate, teacher, and supporter of what we're doing. She loves helping with our processing projects and believes deeply in our mission of feeding local families.

We absolutely adore her.

If you're looking to fill your freezer, process livestock, or support a great cause at the same time, give Whitney a call.

Welcome to the farm!

Satin buck under a year. His parents are 11-12 lbs and I got to meet them.

The girls are Satin/Rex mixes at approximately 3 months of age.

Very stunning bunnies.

Thank you Andrea for the donation!

Some days on the farm are harder than others.

Two days ago, we welcomed Obsidian's first lamb into the world. It was a difficult delivery, and we had to help bring him safely into the world. We named him Flint.

He stood. He nursed. He followed his mom. He seemed to be doing everything right.

This morning, we found that Flint had passed away.

As livestock owners, we know loss is part of farming. It doesn't make it any easier.

The hardest part today wasn't losing a lamb. It was watching Obsidian stand over her baby, calling for him and trying to understand why he wouldn't get up. She is frantic.

Sometimes there are answers. Sometimes there aren't.

For now, we're giving Obsidian a little extra attention, letting her stay close to the flock, and doing our best to help her through it.

Rest easy, little Flint. You were only here for a short time, but you were loved.
