This Saturday (4/25/26) we will conduct the 41st annual Konocti Cup regatta. It's been years since the strong support of resorts and businesses welcomed up to 50 boats to sail Clear Lake but KBSC proudly works to keep the race alive. It's not too late to join a beautiful long sail on the lake. The forecast is lovely and the lake is full of water and wildlife! https://www.kbsail.org/konocti-cup-2026.html
Some local boats are still being repaired and crews and skippers have other challenges as well, but the Half Cup will be white sails only and some boats participating are sailing the course for fun!

The Full Cup is one of the favorite early races for the Wylie Wabbit fleet and the are infamously fast sloops that win many SF Bay regattas! The club has two boats entered that might give them, if the winds stay mild, some competition. It will be fun regardless!

Sometimes, a flood of seasonal tourists is a welcome sight. The winter migration begins....

Our Wednesday evening "beer can" sails are in full swing though space is sometimes limited. The best winds on the lake happen each evening as the cooling wind from the coast seeks the heat of the Sacramento Valley. The air and the lake are warm enough that swimwear and occasional splashing are a joy. Maybe you can pack a picnic dinner and come on down to Braito's by 5PM?

Start of the first practice start. ROCK THE CAT'S PAW in the lead. Pretty sure they corrected out for the win.

Personally, I can't stand FB anymore. It's full of flotsam like the post below. Still, promoting sailing on Clear Lake drags me to social media. While I was almost interested enough to search for veracity of the claim in the post, the obvious AI photo had me both amused and horrified.
Maybe because it's April 1? The Drew Carey show used to have 4/1 episodes where one was encouraged to count the weirdnesses (sic). This would be the sailing variant.

1. Cat rig?-maybe face forward. (see #3)
2. Never jibe this boat, tacking would be ugly too.
3. Rudder / wheel in the bow?
4. Shrouds are for decoration, as every sailor knows.
5. Ditto lines.
6. Even If you're sailing wing on wing, your foresail is backwards.
7. Belowdeck access or storage for real offshore gear when not modeling?
8. A winch! Those are handy if properly placed.

Winter sailing is a special time as the migratory birds-Eagles, Eared Grebes, Cormorants, White Pelicans, all add to the local abundant population of wildlife. We had a now-typical January of DRY weather, coming to an end this weekend and adding a new series of WET storms to a lake that will be full at their exit.

We (OSIRs, KBSC) are enjoying a broad level of interest and participation that is a heartening renaissance to the 100 year history of sailing on California's oldest lake. Somehow, new sailors are coming from Sacramento, Fort Bragg, Sonoma County and, of course, locally to enjoy this "Where is everybody" 65 sq mi lake.

If you follow Caroline Paul, her book mentions club member Susan Parker's son Eric, who continues to amaze us with his joie de vivre. Her book "Tough Broad" says DO IT and while we'd love for you to sail or socialize with us, the message of get out resonates with us as a mantra of life. Our youngest member is 9 year old. The oldest is 93! Both love FOREDECK position - setting the big pretty but ill mannered sail on a sailboat. Maybe you want to just watch the aforementioned birds or swim in the Summer. Maybe sailing isn't your thing but regardless, the message is to learn a skill, try something new, play, listen, see, learn. Another book claimed we got this lesson in kindergarten but somehow...

Our final official race of the year will be conducted Saturday 11/16. This is supposed to be a "fun" race though the "Oxymoron Police" may have to give us a pass. Bill Pickering is the inventor of this race and once supposedly had a crew of Turkeys...real, frozen, or just his regular crew, the legend does not elaborate. Come on down Saturday 11AM @ Braito's and sail with us!

07/12/2024

Join us for "Lunch on the Lake" tomorrow, Saturday July 13th. Come down to Braito's around noon to sail down to Richmond Park. If you don't have a boat, there should be a ride you can catch. Plan on meeting at RP at 14:00. Come by car if you don't have a boat!

Their kitchen can get backed up, so order food early. It will be a fun day with music playing, drinks, food and comradery.

July 13th will be our first "Lunch on the Lake" cruise. Sailors and boaters take to the lake around noon or so. Then we all meet up at Richmond Park Bar and Grill for lunch around 14:00. If you can't make it by boat, you can come by car. RPBAG should have music playing around that time as well.

See you on the lake!
