The primary goal of this group is to support our local community. Several pressing issues on Kelleys Island that concern me include:
Rehabilitation Services
Assisted Living for our aging population
Employee Housing
I believe we could establish a single facility that addresses all these needs, primarily an assisted living center that would feature a rotating medical and caregiver staff, potentially in partnership with Firelands or Magruder Hospital.
Additionally, we could provide employee housing for staff and island employees who are willing to volunteer some of their free time to engage with the elderly and assist in the facility.
One section of the facility could be dedicated to rehabilitation, equipped with the necessary tools.
The design could follow an open format similar to Otterbein in Lakeside/Marblehead, with a central kitchen and dining area surrounded by individual rooms. Some of these rooms could eventually be designated for nursing care, or if we acquire more land in the future, we could expand our services.
Our first steps should involve securing land and fundraising to purchase it. I am looking for individuals who have experience in forming foundations. A few people have expressed interest, but I often lose focus.
We will need to establish a committee or board of directors.
One of my main concerns with organizations like this is the risk of embezzlement and mismanagement of funds. It’s crucial that we implement regular monitoring and auditing to ensure that funds are used appropriately and not for personal gain. Everyone involved should be willing to undergo screening and background checks.
I welcome any suggestions on how to proceed or alternative ideas. While we could explore what Erie County offers, I believe it’s essential to build our own facility and then integrate their services.
Does the village have any land available for purchase or use?
I am not the right person to lead this initiative, but I would be interested in serving on the board. Initially, we will need volunteers to contribute their time, as we currently lack funding. I prefer a model where all participants are volunteers to prevent funds from being misallocated to a director instead of the project.
