Westory Fire was dispatched this afternoon for an uncontrolled fire. Crews arrived on scene and were able to get it knocked down. While the homeowner was using a legal fire pit embers and heat combined with today’s wind were still able to let this take off. We want to remind people that even though we have received a fair amount of rain and have standing water in the fields, vegetation from last fall still remains dry and fire can spread quickly.

Crews on scene early this morning for a power pole on fire. Crews monitored until Alliant Energy was able to get on scene.

Westory Fire was dispatched for mutual aid to Slater Fire for reports of a barn fire. Westory 107 was first on scene with Huxley Fire 106 dehind them. Crews from Huxley already packed up were able to stretch a line from our truck and provided a quick knock down. Thank you for the quick response from everyone.

Another prescribed burn in the books for 2026!

Westory Fire got the chance to get out this evening to do some prescribed burning for the Birdhaven HOA. We appreciate them partnering with us every year to help them out but also give the chance for our members to get some training under their belts.

Today in Ames history: On March 11, 1974, firefighters from Kelley battled a blaze in the office building at the Ames Nursery south of Ames. The fire of undetermined origin almost completely gutted the building.

Ames Nursery was at this location from 1948 to 2005. It was owned by Lloyd Cafferty and his son, Phil.
