Congratulations to our newlywed teammates Adam and Yvanna who were married on June 6th in Normandy. And these crazy kids were at 0445 manifest call on June 7th for the La Fiere jump!

Jil, co‑founder of Liberty Jump Team, was able to visit the tribute to her father, Major Gordon K. Smith, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, now displayed in Gouberville.

Gordon Smith was born 2 July 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and entered the U.S. Army in 1938, later graduating from Wentworth Military Academy and receiving his commission. He joined the paratroopers early, earning his Master Parachutist Wings.

By D‑Day, he was a Major in the 507th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division, and parachuted into Normandy on 6 June 1944. He was wounded that day and captured, spending the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war in Germany and Poland before liberation in May 1945.

Major Smith continued a 30‑year Army career, serving in key airborne and infantry assignments including the 501st, 507th, 325th AIR, and 511th PIR. His career also included duty with the Panama Caribbean Defense Command, service in Korea with the United Nations POW Command and the 38th Infantry, and later roles as an airborne instructor, battalion commander, and senior staff officer. He served overseas in Venezuela, Korea, and multiple tours in Panama, and concluded his career as Chief Instructor of ROTC at Louisiana State University. He retired in 1969.

His decorations included the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, POW Medal, French Croix de Guerre with Gold Star, and numerous other awards. In 2009, France presented him with the Legion of Honor for his service in the liberation of Normandy.

LTC (Ret.) Gordon Kenneth Smith, the last surviving member of the original 82nd Airborne Division’s 507th PIR command group, passed away on 21 September 2009 in San Antonio, Texas.
