It is with great sadness that I must inform you the powers that be inside City Hall have indeed terminated the Operating Rights Agreement and associated property lease with Cheshire TV. As such, we will no longer be managing or scheduling the content that the community has enjoyed for over 15 years on channels 1301 and 1302, formerly 8 and 10. Public Access to the studio and production equipment, with which we have worked together to create thousands of hours of incredibly diverse and meaningful local content, will also no longer be handled by CTV.

It remains uncertain at this time who or if anyone will carry the torch from here. Obviously we are extremely concerned for the future of Public Access, not just here but across the nation. Wherever they are not purposely protected, PEG channels face continual attack by those who would question the value a non-commercial, untamed, independent outlet for free speech, and who would suggest its meager funding might be repurposed for common things each time budget season rolls around. Our own fight has been going since the very beginning as well, sometimes in the light, and always in the background. Eventually, as the long game is played steadily, quietly, such efforts will succeed.

I sincerely hope the good people of Keene will watch closely, contact their representatives, get involved, insist upon good stewardship and, most importantly, use your voices - your Constitutionally Protected Right to Free Speech - whenever and wherever necessary in order to affect positive change in this world.

It has been our distinct honor and great pleasure to serve both Keene and the greater community in so many fun, exciting, interesting ways over the years. Be well, friends, and do good work!

Welp. We had cured our issues - and then the City stepped in to cancel our contract. We'll be going off the air this week unless a few people at City Hall can be convinced to have open dialog and a real negotiation to address their lingering concerns. The ONLY thing that will help is your call, right now, to those who have made this decision without democratic process, behind closed doors. Right now, today, please and thanks:

Cheshire TV will be going OFF THE AIR completely by next Friday unless the people can reach their representatives and and demand they pull this 100% manufactured threat to Public access. Call your councilor, call City Manager Elizabeth Dragon, call Mayor George Hansel, heck, call him on Saturday morning on WKBK! They themselves created this, and they can stop it at any time if they choose. Their various, vague excuses for this ultimatum do not pass the smell test. The change they demand is dangerous to your rights to free speech, it is exactly the path Public Access takes when it goes away in any community, by the playbook. CALL THEM!! Cheshire TV is funded by the Spectrum subscribers and exists to serve the people in our community first and foremost. Not a dime "taxpayer money" has ever been spent on Cheshire TV. It is an incredibly valuable community resource. Why do the people get no say in the handling of this public treasure that took a community to build? Where is the democratic process, where is the transparency in our leadership? Call for an END to this action. Just. Stop. It. Call for a PUBLIC HEARING on why Keene's free and independent Public Access is being taken away by a few individuals at City Hall.

With just over a week until Cheshire TV's contract with Keene is set to expire, the membership of the public access station has rejected a proposal from the city that

It's about to get real, friends. The incredible value Cheshire TV has provided for bargain-basement rates has come under attack by those who would begrudge our modest budget, and who would pave roads with this soon-to-be tax on cable subscribers instead. The rationale is also, depending on the day, that the people can't be trusted to manage their own business, the government needs to do it. Call your city councilor, call the City Manager, only YOU can save Cheshire TV. Remind them there are elections, and that a handful of individuals in City Hall taking this resource that the community built together away without cause or reason is NOT acceptable to those they are supposed to represent. CALL THEM, please and thanks!

Lots of people asking, so here's the latest on the situation between Cheshire TV and the City of Keene. FOP Committee did not opt to make a recommendation for a public hearing or forum as was requested, so tonight City Council will receive this item to be simply accepted as informational. Hopefully we'll hear some discussion as it is presented. The two parties have since had some constructive dialog, and we will renew our focus on a negotiated solution that gives both parties the security needed to continue our relationship. We'd appreciate your presence tonight, and of course your calls and letters to the councilors are still needed. CTV Members and the public will be invited to meet via Zoom for an in-depth discussion of the perceptions, problems, and possible solutions in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Jim: The James Foley Story was shown at Monadnock International Film Festival a few years back. It's worth making an effort to see this important, carefully crafted, somber film about this amazing man's life and work.

Rochester’s community center is being renamed for freelance war correspondent James Foley, who was killed by ISIS in Syria in 2014.
