🦊🐾 Look who came by our trail camera on conserved land in the northeastern Adirondacks earlier this month... This red fox shows how the species is on the move in all seasons. Their range can contract in spring, when they are raising kits and need to be close to a den. And while we don't know how far this fox traveled, we know they can travel more than six miles in a day!

Each wildlife moment reminds us that land conservation protects wildlife habitat so that animals can move freely in search of mates and food. That's why protecting wildlife habitat is central to the Adirondack Land Trust's mission is to forever conserve the forests, farmlands, waters and wild places that support quality of life and ecological integrity in the Adirondacks.

We’re buzzing with ideas and energy after the New York Land Conservation Conference this week! We joined land trust colleagues from across the state to hear about innovative conservation projects and get out on the land for inspiring field trips.

Here’s just a peek at what we learned and experienced over two days in Queensbury, NY:

Getting outside with Saratoga PLAN at their new Curtis Preserve to learn the tools and methods behind the Universal Trail Assessment Process and how it can be used to increase accessibility.

🌳 How the Orange County Land Trust partnered with the DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program to implement Trees for Tribs projects in 2025, with 10 projects where they planted more than 2,200 native trees and shrubs to support riparian restoration.

🌱 A closer look at the native plant propagation programs from the North Shore Alliance and Teatown Lake Reservation that create more sustainable restoration efforts while cultivating biodiversity.

🎨 Exploring how land trusts can integrate artistic collaboration into stewardship with creative, community-based art projects that interpret ecological processes with the Woodstock Land Conservancy.

🕵️‍♀️ A deep dive into underground conservation with the Northeastern Cave Conservancy, which operates throughout the Northeast wherever caves and karst are present and partners with other land trusts to increase public access to caves while protecting sensitive ecosystems.

And so much more! We were thrilled to have our Next Generation Council members Naishaly Vélez Gálan and Olivia Jobe there to bring new insights and perspectives to their work as advisors and ambassadors for the Adirondack Land Trust.

Thank you to the Land Trust Alliance New York team for hosting a wonderful event and bringing land trusts together to advance conservation across the state.

Take a peek at the wildflowers in bloom and trail scenes from a field trip this weekend at our Westport Preserve led by naturalist Audrey Hyson. This preserve features south-facing slopes and rich soils, which provide conditions for spectacular spring wildflowers and trees usually found farther south, such as red and white oak and shagbark hickory.

May is the perfect time to see spring ephemerals at the Westport Preserve. From the trailhead on Halds Road, there are two trails to choose from. A steep but moderate 0.7-mile hike up the Summit Trail takes you through a craggy ravine and rocky outcrops to an overlook with panoramic views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondack High Peaks, and Vermont’s Green Mountains. The Hidden Valley Trail is a gentler 0.9-mile loop that meanders through maturing mixed forest and crosses a small brook. Whichever way you go, stay alert for long-spurred violets, red trilliums, miterwort, springbeauty, red efts, and jack in the pulpits.

Thank you to all the wildflower fans who joined us, and we hope to see you again soon on the trail!

💖 Wow, a huge thank you to our Next Generation Council! At their meeting this past weekend, this group of passionate volunteers presented the Adirondack Land Trust with $2,550 they raised to support increased access to the Adirondack Land Trust's Glenview Preserve near Saranac Lake and High Meadow Preserve outside Lake Placid.

This gift was the result of the sale of $5 stickers featuring artwork by Next Gen member Lura Johnson. To all of you who bought a sticker, thank you for your generosity and commitment to connecting people to nature! Proceeds from this fundraiser will be dedicated to building accessible wildland trails, hosting field trips, and outreach to Adirondack residents and visitors who face physical, social, or financial barriers to immersive experiences in nature.

We have more stickers available! Visit our website to make a donation of $5 and join Next Gen in shaping a future where people and nature continue to thrive in the Adirondacks: https://adirondacklandtrust.org/next-generation-council-fundraiser-expands-access-to-nature-by-celebrating-art/

This week, Sam Duchaine headed to Albany to represent the Adirondack Land Trust at Adirondack Day. Along with other conservation and stewardship organizations working in the Adirondacks, Sam visited the Legislative Office Building to share our region's economic diversity with New York state officials and lawmakers. Sam talked about how land and water conservation supports jobs in forestry, farming, outdoor recreation, and many other fields, plus how we work with partners and regions across the Adirondacks to forever conserve the forests, waters, farmland, and wild places that help people and nature thrive together.

Many thanks to the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and Adirondack Mountain Club for organizing this event and bringing the Adirondacks to Albany.

The Adirondack Park is made up of six million acres of protected lands and waters—and roughly half of this landscape is made up of privately owned land that is home to communities, families, working forests, and farms.

On May 2 and 3 in Schroon Lake, the Adirondack Landowners Association hosts The Living Landscape, a conference dedicated to exploring the threats, the opportunities, and ways forward to a resilient and vibrant Adirondacks. We're proud to sponsor this event and bring people together to share knowledge and ideas to better care for the lands and waters that support wildlife habitat, healthy communities, and so much more.

Registration closes today, April 24! Learn more and register here: https://www.adklandowners.org/livinglandscape
