A NEW KESTREL MONITORING PROJECT
The American Kestrel is one of our smallest local raptors and a species of special concern in New Hampshire. This year, the Harris Center is launching a new kestrel monitoring initiative, starting with collecting baseline data about kestrel breeding across the Monadnock Region. If you know of nesting kestrels in the Monadnock Region, we want to hear about it! You can report kestrel sightings to eBird or to Phil Brown at [email protected]. We're also offering a two-part training for interested volunteers: an online introduction to kestrel life history on the night of April 28, followed by a morning in the field on April 30.

Tracking data continues to filter in with four broadwings back in North America.

Arrving on their breeding grounds shortly, Frankie takes the lead just outside of Gainesville, Georgia. Following Frankie, we have Charlotte 2.0 who is right at the Mississippi-Alabama state border and CU HOME passing through southern Mississippi. Trailing behind is Harris, who is currently flying through Tamaulipas along the Gulf Coast of Mexico!

Ever trail a big rig on the highway to save gas on a long road trip? Don't do that, it's dangerous!

What's crazy is that ducklings will do something wonderfully similar, and it took a physics expert to tell us how.

This lesson in physics won't put you to sleep, it'll warm your heart.

By paddling in just the right spots, ducklings save energy by surfing their mom’s waves, and pass along the benefit to siblings down the line.

Northern Saw-whet Owls migrate through for the next few weeks. Check stands of cedar trees or dense thickets for roosting owls during the day and listen for their hoot, which sounds like a backing truck’s safety beeps.
