KCO President, Dr. José Lezcano, wanted to share some exciting information about our upcoming concert:
Violinist Gaetana Martin, a talented member of the KCO, will be soloist in the popular Bruch Concerto in G minor.
Of special interest is a performance of the rarely heard "Tres Danzas Cubanas" by Cuban composer Alejandro Garcia Caturla. Caturla was one of a group of composers who pioneered modernism in Cuba during the 1930s-40s while referencing Afrocuban popular music and rhythms. He studied with French pedagogue and composer Nadia Boulanger, and the French influence can be heard in the colorful, complex orchestration.
Unjustly neglected German Romantic composer Emilie Mayer, a contemporary of Schubert and Beethoven, composed many symphonies and chamber music and was celebrated in her time. The audience will hear her Faust Overture.
Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony bears witness to the Russian composer's struggles with the repressive Soviet system and cultural bureaucracy, and his resilience and fortitude to return to favor with the government and public after enduring harsh criticism for his Opera, "Lady Macbeth of Mtensk."
Mark your calendars now, as Keene Chamber Orchestra presents Global Tapestries!
