People packed the Keene City Council’s chambers in City Hall while an overflow crowd stood in the lobby during a special council meeting Monday called after federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were in Keene last week.

What an incredible day for Keene. ❤️

Saturday we officially unveiled the Dr. Albert C. Johnston Historical Marker at 127 Washington Street, the former home and medical office of Dr. Johnston, Keene’s first radiologist.

Dr. Johnston and his family lived in Keene while passing as white during an era when racial discrimination severely limited where Black families could live, work, and build their futures. Their remarkable story later inspired the book and film Lost Boundaries.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was welcoming members of the Johnston family back to Keene to see this piece of their family’s history permanently recognized.

I’m incredibly proud to have played a part in bringing this project to life alongside the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, and the Historical Society of Cheshire Countyand so many community partners who helped make it happen.

This marker gives us a permanent reminder that Black history is New Hampshire history. It is Keene history. And it happened right here in our community.

So grateful to everyone who showed up Saturday to help us honor it. ❤️
