Healing Power to Turn Bitter Into Sweet

Scripture
“...For I am the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26 (NKJV)

Digging Deeper — Hebrew Word: rapha (raw-faw')
The Hebrew word translated “healed” is rapha. It means to heal, cure, restore to health, and to make whole. In Hebrew, God is revealed as Jehovah Rapha—the LORD who heals.

Reflection
After the Israelites left Egypt, they spent three days in the wilderness without water. When they finally found water, they could not drink it because it was bitter. Moses cried out to God, and He showed him a tree and told him to throw it in the water, and the water was healed and became “sweet.”

Then God told the people that He would not bring on any of the diseases that He put on the Egyptians if they would listen to Him, do what was right in His eyes, and obey His commandments.

God showed the people that He has the power to heal and protect them from diseases. He revealed Himself in the Old Testament as Jehovah Rapha—the LORD who heals.

This same God is revealed to us through Jesus Christ in the New Testament. During His earthly ministry, Jesus healed people physically, forgave sins, restored people spiritually, and showed compassion to those who suffered. Jesus is alive today, and He continues to work in our lives, bringing healing, comfort, strength, and restoration.

When betrayal, lies, hurtful words, and disappointment break trust, they can cause deep pain and leave hearts broken. Without addressing the hurt, bitterness can take root.

The God who turned bitter water into sweet can also heal bitter hearts.

This is the devotional I wrote for today:

Poignant

Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”

There are seasons in life when we go through times of deep sadness, poignant moments that touch us deeply. John 11 records the account of Lazarus’ death. Jesus was very close to him and his sisters, Mary and Martha. They sent for Jesus, knowing He could heal him, but Jesus arrived four days after he died.

Jesus saw the sadness of Mary, Martha, and all the people who came to mourn the loss of their brother and friend. The Bible’s shortest verse captures this deep sadness: “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35, NIV). How comforting to know we have a Savior who enters into our sorrow with us. Every tear we cry matters to Him. As our Bible verse states, God collects every tear in a bottle—even those cried silently within the heart.

Perhaps you can recall a time when you related to this deep emotion. Perhaps the loss of a loved one, or maybe even a threat to your marriage. Those things we hold dear to us can cause the deepest pain. Good marriages do not happen miraculously on their own. They need tending and nurturing to help them grow.

Jesus came to give Lazarus life once again. He called to him to come out of the grave—and he did! Jesus is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25); our hope is in Him and the words that come out of His mouth. He has the power to resurrect that which feels dead. No matter what challenges you face today, believe that He can breathe that same resurrection life into your relationship.

REFLECTION

Cry Out Together
Let your voices be heard in the heavens as you pray together.

Believe Together
We believe in Jesus’ resurrection and life.
We put our faith in Jesus and not in our circumstances.

Give Thanks Together
We stand firm in believing in the resurrection power of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We give thanks and praise to the One who hears our prayers, trusting in His perfect timing.

PRAYER
Father God, we lift our voices to You to thank You for the life that flows from the mouth of Jesus. Let our words breathe life into our marriage so that our relationship is vibrant and radiant, a testimony to the wonder-working power of Your Son Jesus.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Devoted to nurturing Christ-centered marriages.
