Jesus, light that shines in the darkness, draw near to those mourning today, especially families who must grieve under the weight of public judgment and official uncertainty. Give courage to those demanding truth, accountability, and care. And as we light this candle, rededicate us to your way of justice. Make us a church that refuses to let any person be reduced to their papers, status, nationality, or detention record. Teach us to see every life as beloved, every death as worthy of mourning, and every neighbor as kin. Amen.

This week, we light the Candle of Peace, Hope, and Justice for all people who play a mothering role of any kind, and for the struggles that mothering presents at this moment in time.

For mothers and babies worldwide who are now at greater risk of death as massive funding cuts to U.S. foreign assistance threaten to reverse decades of progress in reducing maternal and child mortality.

For those offering kinship care—the extended family, friends, community members, and foster parents who mother children left behind when their parents have been deported, who have no answer to offer when a child asks, “When will my mom be home?”

For women supporting families in times of economic hardship and rising prices, when cuts to Medicaid, housing supports, and food assistance like SNAP mean basic needs will go unmet.

For those who desire to be mothers, but can’t.

For LGBTQ+ families who fear the loss of parental rights through restricted access to adoption and other ways to build their families.

For those grieving the loss of mothers—and for mothers grieving the loss of children, and those they love like children—through death, disappointment, distance, estrangement, or neglect.

As we approach Easter, we pray for those who have been separated from their children with no warning or chance to say goodbye.

For those who have sought safety from violence, persecution, or trafficking only to find themselves imprisoned instead of protected.

For those who have lost access to healthcare and life-saving vaccines, medications, and treatment.

For those navigating high-risk pregnancies without the freedom to make safe and compassionate medical decisions.

For our transgender siblings and LGBTQ+ youth who face rejection, erasure, or loss of care.

For those who have sought safety from violence, persecution, or trafficking, only to find themselves imprisoned instead of protected.

For Black, Brown, and other people of color who continue to endure discrimination and unequal protection under the law.
