What makes the Empower Kearney Leadership Academy different?

For graduate Curtis Murphree, owner of Travelin' Tom's Coffee of Liberty and Kona Ice Clay County / North Kansas City, one of the biggest surprises wasn't just what he learned—it was the relationships he built along the way.

"Everyone pushed each other to grow while also being supportive when things got tough."

Leadership Academy brings together professionals from different industries, backgrounds, and experiences, creating an environment where participants learn from one another, challenge each other, and build lasting connections.

In fact, Curtis still keeps in touch with members of his Leadership Academy cohort today.

Leadership development is important. Having a community that supports your growth makes it even more impactful.

Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 Empower Kearney Leadership Academy.

Today we recognize and honor Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and progress.

As we reflect on our nation's history, we also recognize the importance of building communities where everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, contribute, and thrive.

💡 Empower Tuesday

Meet Angela Gudde with the Senior Community Center , a graduate of the Empower Kearney: Leadership Academy.

Before joining the Leadership Academy, Angela wasn't sure the program was for her because she didn't directly manage staff. What she discovered was that leadership isn't limited to those with management titles.

Through the program, she strengthened her communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while gaining greater confidence in her ability to lead and make a positive impact.

One of her biggest takeaways?

👉 "You don't need a management title to be an effective leader."

Leadership opportunities exist every day—in our workplaces, our volunteer efforts, and our communities.
