As we gather this week, it’s important to hold space for the full story — not just the one we were taught in school.

Thanksgiving, for many Indigenous communities, is not a simple celebration. It’s a reminder of colonization, stolen land, broken treaties, and the genocide of Native peoples. It’s a history that deserves to be acknowledged with honesty, respect, and heart.

But there is also another truth:
Indigenous peoples are still here. Still thriving. Still protecting culture, land, language, and tradition.
Resilience is woven into their story, not just survival.

So today, we choose to honor both realities:
🌾 The truth of what happened.
🌾 The strength of Indigenous communities.
🌾 The commitment to do better, learn more, and stand with those whose history is often silenced.

And at the same time, many of us gather this week to celebrate:
❤️ Family
❤️ Connection
❤️ Warm meals
❤️ Gratitude
❤️ The love that brings us together

We can hold both—honesty and love, history and hope.
We can celebrate togetherness without ignoring the past.
We can enjoy the present while choosing to be more aware, more compassionate, and more intentional.

May this season be one of reflection, truth-telling, and deep appreciation—
for family, for community,
and for the enduring strength of Indigenous peoples everywhere.

How are you honoring truth and gratitude this week?

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day is a way to honor and recognize the cultures, contributions, and resilience of Indigenous peoples around the world.

Indigenous Peoples' Day serves as a counter-narrative to Columbus Day, which historically celebrated Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas but often overlooked the devastating impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities.

Here are some meaningful ways to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day on behalf of all the Native people who have faced conquest and colonization:

Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about the history, cultures, and contemporary issues of Indigenous peoples in your region and around the world. Read books, watch documentaries, and engage with Indigenous voices and perspectives.

Support Indigenous Businesses: Seek out and purchase products from Indigenous-owned businesses and artisans. Supporting their economic endeavors can help empower Indigenous communities.

Advocate for Indigenous Rights: Advocate for policies and initiatives that support the rights and well-being of Indigenous peoples, such as land rights, access to education, healthcare, and cultural preservation.

Donate to Indigenous Causes: Contribute to organizations and charities that work to address issues facing Indigenous communities, such as environmental protection, health care, and education.

Engage in Cultural Exchange: If you have the opportunity, participate in cultural exchange programs that allow you to learn from Indigenous communities directly and share your own culture respectfully.

Reflect and Raise Awareness: Take time to reflect on the historical injustices and ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous peoples. Share this information with friends and family to raise awareness about Indigenous issues.

Support Reconciliation Efforts: In some regions, reconciliation efforts are underway to address the historical trauma and promote healing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Support and participate in these initiatives if possible.

Respect Indigenous Lands: If you are visiting or living on Indigenous lands, be respectful of their sovereignty, traditions, and sacred sites. Learn about land acknowledgments and incorporate them into your practices.

Engage in Allyship: Be an ally to Indigenous peoples by listening to their voices, amplifying their perspectives, and standing with them in their struggles for justice and equality.

Remember that celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day is not just a one-day event but an ongoing commitment to support and uplift Indigenous communities. It's essential to approach this day and your efforts with respect, humility, and a willingness to learn from Indigenous perspectives and experiences.

They call it Labor Day,
a day for the working ones,
for those whose hands shaped cities,
whose bodies carried the weight of nations.

But for us, labor was always older,
always gentler, always sacred.
It was the joy of planting seeds in soft earth,
the laughter of paddles striking water,
the ceremony of raising children,
the songs that guided us from fire to fire.

Our work has always been more than survival —
it has been love,
woven into beadwork,
carved into canoes,
sung into prayers that rose with the smoke.

Yes, there were times when labor became heavy —
when mines and mills called our people away,
when our children were forced to toil in schools
that tried to dim their spirits.
But even then, the light endured.
The kokums still stitched the stars into moccasins,
the hunters still rose with the dawn,
the aunties still wrapped little ones in arms of belonging.
Even in hardship, our labor grew gardens of hope.

So when the world rests on Labor Day,
let us remember:
our labor is not only struggle —
it is joy.
It is ceremony.
It is the smile of a child learning their first Cree word.
It is the pride of water protectors standing together.
It is the soft strength of songs that will never die.

We labor for life itself.
For the children not yet born,
for the ancestors who dreamed us into being,
for the land that still cradles us with love.

This is our Labor Day —
a day not just of rest,
but of remembering that our work is holy,
our path is strong,
and our future is full of light.

Hands of the Turtle Nation

Upon the turtle’s ancient shell,
Four hands in colors softly tell,
Of earth, of kin, of spirits near,
Of bonds unbroken, year by year.

May every palm, from dawn to night,
Give more than take, bring more than fight,
Shape hope from clay, let kindness grow,
And heal the wounds we used to know.

We weave the thread, we mend, we tend,
In every stranger, find a friend,
For under moon, sun’s gentle light,
We are all related, bound in right.

The turtle walks, the feathers sway,
Carrying our prayers along the way,
That hand in hand, through time and tide,
We keep the sacred flame alive.
