The sunsets/moonrises at St Christopher’s Mission were magnificent during the RWI board’s visit. Between hikes to the top of the mesa above the site and moonrise photo shoots, we never missed a moment to enjoy the serenity and gloriousness of this historic place that has been serving the Navajo since the 1940s. We are glad to be part of its renewal.

As part of our time at St. Christopher’s Mission, we were invited to celebrate with Kathy Plummer, retired minister and longtime resident of St. Christopher’s Mission, at a key moment in her house build “across the river” in the Navajo Reservation. She has waited decades to be able to build a home on the ancestral grazing land of her clan, and with the invaluable help of the mission’s current vicar, Joe Hubbard, is finally seeing it happen. The architecture graduate students , who designed the house and are building it by hand, made a presentation about their process, and we got to hear from Kathy and her family about the importance of this event and the stories associated with the land. Honored to have been part of it.

Maintenance is key to longevity of historic places. The retreat house at St Christopher’s Mission needed a new coat of sealant to keep its fascia and eaves resilient under the hot and dry SE Utah conditions, and the RWI board was happy to oblige while we were on site this week.

The RWI board helped move the Mission’s large collection of books and some bookshelves from the old schoolhouse (soon to be food pantry and bunk house) into the historic Retreat House. A cozy result and now more accessible to everyone coming through the space.

The RWI board had the privilege of sharing spaghetti dinner with our new friends at St Christopher’s Mission last night. The Diné (Navajo for “The People”) who have memories of the mission from their childhoods and who sustain it today as staff and leadership have been so kind to share their stories and memories with us while we’re here.

RWI’s board of directors is on site in Utah, assessing the needs of our new partner, the St. Christopher’s Mission, for their National Register-listed historic site. The 1943 mission campus is an unusual site where the traditional Diné (“The People” in Navajo) teachings and ceremonies have been honored and practiced together with Episcopal teachings and ceremonies for nearly 80 years. The reimagination of St. Christopher’s Mission will reactivate the historic campus, improving facilities and bringing new community and social services with the aim of creating a safe place for truthtelling, reckoning with difficult histories, and journeying toward healing and wholeness.
