Ka Honua Momona'a mission is to be a model of sustainability mauka a makai (mountains to sea).

The work that we do at Ka Honua Momona helps reenergize Hawaiians to be Hawaiian and helps those who are not Hawaiian connect to Hawaiian values, culture and traditions. Our theory of change is an iterative process of four core principals: Hoewe (root in culture), Mai ka naau (deep sharing), Kahu Holina (stewardship), and Ka imi ike (education). Everything we do here is informed by the wisdom of our elders. Our kupuna help to connect us to the values our ancestors lived by. We feel it is important to hoewe, to root ourselves, and especially our opio (youth), in our host culture. And that is at the heart of our work. Each person that comes to Ka Honua Momona brings their own story – whether they are 2 or 92. What separates opio from kupuna is not whether they’ve experienced life’s paths, but rather, how many times. Each day’s work begins and ends with deep sharing, mai ka naau, from the gut, because our collective stories give this work meaning.

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming and spending time with our Moloka’i Kūpuna from the Alu Like program.

With a focus on healthy nutrition, our kūpuna had the opportunity to enjoy fresh mea ‘ai grown and gathered from Ali’i. From vegetables grown in our Anuenue greenhouse, to i’a from the Loko i’a. There’s something special about sharing a meal that comes directly from the ‘āina and Kai that continue to feed and care for us 🥒🍅🥬🐠🎣🌊

More than anything, we enjoyed the time spent talking story, laughing, and sharing ‘Ike around the table. These moments of exchanging knowledge and experiences between generations are what strengthen our pilina to one another and to place. Mahalo Nui for joining us today! 🙏❤️

Happy 1-year work anniversary to Maika! 🎉👏

Old-current photos for this guy!
Today we celebrate Maika Rawlins and one full year of hard work, dedication, and growth with KHM.

As a valued member of our ‘āina crew, Maika has put in countless hours caring for Ali’i and Kaloko’eli, tackling hard work that comes with restoration. He has continued to show up and put in the hana.

The progress we celebrate today goes beyond his work at KHM. Over the past year, Maika has also made incredible strides in his personal journey to commit himself to healthier life choices, staying active, and achieving inspiring weight-loss. His dedication to bettering himself reflects the same dedication he brings to work everyday.
Ho’omaika’i on ONE YEAR, Maika! 😊 we appreciate you!

Today we had the pleasure of having two of our amazing wāhine from join us for a hike after spending their morning doing kilo and collecting data at our Loko i’a. 🪴💧

There is something truly special about walking the ‘āina, learning together, and seeing the evidence left behind by our ‘Akamai kūpuna who came before us. These places hold so much history, ‘Ike, and reminders of the deep connection our kūpuna had with ‘āina and Kai.

Every step gives us another opportunity to learn, observe, and deepens our understanding of the place we are fortunate to mālama. Mahalo Nui Kehau and Mihana for sharing space with us.

“Don’t push the button!” Lol
Mahalo to our drone pilot for coming in when we yelled for help 😆
Never a dull moment with our KHM Ohana ❤️

Did you know KHM’s office is off/grid and powered by solar energy?

Built in 2010, our office began as a house kit and came together with the kōkua of a youth group from Hāna, Maui, Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike. We also had some Moloka’i interns join the construction program as well. Their hard work helped create a space that continues to serve our organization and community today.

The design of our office was intentional. Its round shape reflects the Loko i’a at the heart of our work, while the interior was designed to allow our administrative staff to work closely together and collaboratively carry out KHM’s daily business operations. 💙

Today we share a glimpse of the surprise baby shower luncheon we put together for our amazing Program Director KJ Tanaka.
There’s nothing we love more than celebrating our KHM Ohana especially, welcoming another pond baby into the family. 🥰🍼

We can’t wait to welcome this little one- the newest member of our pond Ohana and, who knows, maybe even the next generation of Lawai’a. 🐟🎣
From tiny hands at the pond to future hands caring for it, the next generation is already on its way 💙

Congratulations māmā!!! 🌺🤰🏻

Today we celebrate someone who has dedicated her heart, time, and life to serving our community. 🎉 Happy Birthday to our incredible Executive Director, Tiani Cook!

This Saturday also marks an amazing milestone of 13 years at KHM. From the time she was a teenager, Tiani has poured her passion into protecting our ‘āina, restoring our Loko i’a, empowering our youth, and strengthening our community.

🎂🥳Hau’oli lā hānau, Here’s to many more years of inspiring others and caring for our people and ‘āina.

Our ‘Āina crew has been hard at work rebuilding our pa’akai (Hawaiian salt) boxes. A very important step in preserving a traditional practice that has sustained our people for generations. 🌊🧂

These salt beds use the natural power of the sun and ocean to transform seawater into beautiful pa’akai crystals. Beyond adding flavor, pa’akai holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in Hawai’i, symbolizing purification, protection and our connection to the ‘āina and Kai.

As a bonus, naturally harvested Hawaiian sea salt contains Less sodium than many processed table salts, making it a flavorful alternative. ❤️

Half of 2026 has flown by already and we are planning programs for 2027.

One of them is our Internship Reunion where we are welcoming all past interns back to Ali’i and Kaloko’eli to reconnect with each other and the ‘āina/kai. We dedicate this event to Uncle Mervin Dudoit who has been a long time caretaker of both Loko i’a, and still talks about his time at this wahi.

We hope everyone can make it! If you are a past intern, please RSVP via the QR code on the flyer. We look forward to the fun activities and rekindling our relationships with you all.
