Kaua'i Forest Bird Recovery Project

Kaua'i Forest Bird Recovery Project KFBRP works to promote knowledge, appreciation, and conservation of Kaua'i's native forest birds. Our efforts focus on the three endangered species

The Kaua'i Forest Bird Recovery Project researches the ecology of Kaua'i's native forest birds to improve attempts to conserve and recover them. All of these species are endemic to Hawaii (i.e., found nowhere else in the world), and six are found only on Kaua'i. Three are critically endangered.

What an incredible evening at Kauaʻi High School’s Hō‘ike Lā Mei 2026: He Hulu Aliʻi – The Tale of Lāʻieikawai. 💚🐦🌺

Mahalo nui loa to the students, kumu, musicians, cultural practitioners, artists, and organizers for creating such a moving and powerful celebration of Hawaiian culture, storytelling, and conservation.

We were deeply honored to see Hawaiʻi’s native forest birds and their plight highlighted throughout the evening through stunning performances, beautiful feather work, incredible artwork, and colorful costumes inspired by our native birds. The retelling of the story of Princess Lāʻieikawai was absolutely unforgettable.

Most of all, mahalo for supporting the Kauaʻi Forest Bird Recovery Project and helping raise awareness for the urgent work being done to protect Hawaiʻi’s endangered forest birds and native forests.

It was truly a beautiful night filled with ʻike, culture, and aloha. 🌿

Our Princeville Moʻolelo free lecture series will continue today, Tuesday, May 12th as we welcome Kim Rogers back to our series. Please join us!

She will provide an update on the state of ʻōhiʻa forests on Kauaʻi and share information about a novel response to slowing the spread of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death.

Then, in part two of the evening, Kim will lead us in nature journaling exercises from “still life” settings of seabirds and plants found in the forest. No experience necessary. The only things necessary are paper and pencil and a curious mind. We’ll welcome wonder, soak in a little science, and make some marks and/or notes on paper. Bring your favorite drawing supplies and join us!

Our free talk story event will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:30pm in the Princeville Community Center. For more information, visit www.kauairefuges.org/princeville-moolelo.
