Your Houston Force Fall Tryout night checklist — everything you need to know before you show up.

Use this every Wednesday before you head to Katy Indoor. Walk in prepared. Walk out knowing you gave everything.

PACK YOUR BAG
Court shoes — indoor volleyball shoes only
Knee pads — required on the court
Full water bottle — it is a 2-hour session
Athletic wear — spandex or shorts and t-shirt ready to move

ARRIVE ON TIME
Plan to arrive a few minutes before 6:00 PM. Late arrivals miss critical evaluation time. Tryout starts at 6:00 PM sharp.

BRING YOUR EFFORT
Coaches are watching from the first whistle. Compete on every rep — not just the ones that feel important. Max effort from start to finish.

BRING YOUR ATTITUDE
Respond to coaching. Communicate with teammates. Reset after every mistake. Carry yourself like a Houston Force athlete from the moment you walk through those doors.

"Stop competing against the athlete across the net. Start competing against the version of yourself that is still holding back."

It is human nature to look around the gym and compare. To size up the athlete next to you in line. To watch someone else's serve and wonder if yours is as good. To measure your worth against the player the coaches seem to notice more.

But here is what the best athletes in this sport eventually figure out — that comparison is costing you.

Every second you spend measuring yourself against someone else is a second you are not investing in becoming better than you were yesterday. And the only version of you that actually matters, the only gap worth closing, is the one between who you are right now and who you are capable of being.

That version of you is not the athlete across the net. She is the version of you that finally trusts her serve. The one who goes after every ball without hesitating. The one who communicates without being asked, competes without being reminded, and shows up fully without needing the perfect conditions.

That athlete is in there. She is waiting for you to stop looking sideways and start looking forward.

The only competition that matters is the one happening inside you. Go win it.

"Anyone can show up when things are going well. The ones who change the game are the ones who stay when things fall apart."

It is easy to compete when the serve is landing. When the passes are clean. When the momentum is on your side, and every play feels like confirmation that you belong on that floor.

The real test is what you do when none of that is true.

When the serve clips the net for the third time in a row. When the pass goes sideways, and you can feel the frustration rising in your chest. When the score is against you and the energy is low, and every logical reason to mentally check out is sitting right there in front of you.

That is the moment that defines careers.

Not the tournaments. Not the highlight plays. Not the days when everything clicks. The defining moment is always the one where quitting was an option, and you chose not to take it.

The athlete who stays in the rally when her legs are tired is building something the athlete who gives up never will. The athlete who resets after the error and goes back to serve again is building something the one who shuts down never will.

Stay in it. Every point. Every practice. Every session that feels like it is going nowhere.

Because the athlete who stays is always the one who arrives.

"The noise in your head before the big moment is not a sign that you are not ready. It is proof that you care enough to show up anyway."

Every athlete hears it. The voice that says you are not good enough. That someone else is more prepared. That you are going to mess up the serve, shank a pass, or miss an approach and that it is going to define the whole tryout.

That voice is not going anywhere.

The most confident athletes in the gym are not the ones who never feel doubt. They are the ones who feel it every bit of it and walk onto the floor anyway. Who lace up their shoes, take the first rep, and let the work slowly drown out the noise.

Because here is the truth — doubt shrinks when action starts.

The moment you take your first serve. The first time the ball comes off your platform the way you practiced it. The first competitive play where your body does exactly what your training built it to do, the doubt gets smaller. And smaller. And smaller.

Until all that is left is the athlete who showed up. Who competed. Who refused to let the voice win.

Be louder than your doubt. Every single time.

08/26/2026

"The athletes who reach the top are not the ones who were born with the most ability. They are the ones who refused to waste it."

Talent gets you noticed. Preparation gets you results.

Think about the athletes you admire. The ones who seem untouchable on the court. The ones who make every pass look effortless, and every swing look inevitable, and every competitive moment look like exactly where they were supposed to be.

They were not born that way.

They were built that way. Rep by rep. Correction by correction. Early morning by early morning, late practice by late practice, and every single moment they chose the gym over comfort.

The version of you that competes at the highest level, walks into tryouts with zero hesitation, and plays every point like she owns the floor is not a different person.

She is you. After you decided to stop waiting and start preparing.

The gap between who you are right now and who you want to become is not made of talent. It is made of reps. It is made of decisions. It is made of the daily choice to show up fully even when no one is watching, and nothing is guaranteed.

Go build that version. She is waiting for you to start.
