Why GEST Foundation was created

Thank you for taking time to learn about the GEST Foundation Inc., and why my husband and I created it. It was heartbreaking, having so many people in my life die of cancer. Being diagnosed myself in 2014 with breast cancer, was life changing.

GEST Foundation was named in honor of my mother Gemma (G), father Elmer and Baba/Grandma Elsie (E) and brother Steven (S) who all died from various kinds of cancer. The “T” in GEST stands for my maiden name, Trakalo.

My boys were only 7, 5 and 3 at the time of my diagnosis and my husband was only 32 – that threw our whole world upside down. However, we took one day at a time and made the decision to lean on our faith and have a positive attitude and really cherish each day, not knowing what the next would bring.

Going through several surgeries for my bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstruction, there were many weeks… months, I could not do anything. I couldn’t cook, do laundry, grocery shop, clean, drive or have a “normal” life. My husband was able to work from home and help with day to day needs, but we did not have any family here as we are from Canada, so it was a challenge. I know the burden on my husband Aaron was a lot to bear and I am thankful for his faithfulness, his heart and tenacity through it all.

After going through this period, I knew what the hardest parts for us as a family were and once I started feeling better I knew I had to give back and help others that would be in a similar situation. Some people going through cancer don’t have the option of their spouse working from home, some don’t even have family here or a significant other. Therefore, the GEST Foundation Inc was started.

My heart is to help all people going through cancer during those times that insurance doesn’t cover but is so needed. I want to help with groceries, delivery, home cleaning, home wound care, transportation and even counselling to help with the internal wounds that come with facing the news “you have cancer.”

I will do this by providing grants to those in need. To be able to start providing grants, I need your help in funding. The quicker we get funding and sponsorship support, the faster that I can start accepting applications for the grants and we can give back to the community.

One of the hardest parts of going through cancer is not having support around you and if I can provide that support for families and make their lives just a bit easier while they are going through the “storm” of their life, then it will make me know that I didn’t go through what I did for nothing. I believe we all go through things to make us stronger and build our faith – it’s what we do afterwards that makes the difference, and this is my turn to give back.
