“A Wonderful Organization!”

So says Nancy Kessler, who, a few times a month gets behind the steering wheel of her blue Honda Civic to drive around Westchester County to do good deeds.

Her good deeds involve showing up to the home or apartment of an older adult in the county who is unable to affordably get somewhere they need to go.

"I always feel great when I drive a senior through RideConnect,” the six-year RideConnect volunteer says. “The rides need not be just for medical appointments. I've driven people to the grocery, the hair salon, the senior center for bridge, and even one person who does volunteer work himself!"

RideConnect, which is a program of Family Services of Westchester, provides programs that encourage independence and mobility for adults over 60 in Westchester and Southern Putnam counties.

A caring and able fleet of volunteers like Nancy donate their time and use of their cars to provide rides, completely free of charge, for seniors to do their shopping, medical, social, and other errands.

“It’s about quality of life and helping our older neighbors age in place,” says Executive Director Karen Ganis. “RideConnect is passionate about helping them continue to lead active lives, even though they may no longer be driving.”

RideConnect’s story began in 2010 with the concept of providing a one-stop-shop for older adults to obtain information on transportation options. In 2012, we launched our volunteer driving program, which has since become the heart and soul of RideConnect.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of RideConnect’s organization and work. They hail from all walks of life: young mothers, retirees, full time workers with a weekend hour to spare, and everything in between.

To join Nancy and the rest of this volunteer team in doing good driving deeds, all that’s required is a big heart and the willingness to change the life of someone in need. A great aspect of volunteering with RideConnect is that you set your own schedule. Your commitment is totally flexible: you can drive as little or as often as you would like to the communities you’d like to serve.

“RideConnect is easy for seniors to use and so very organized for both clients and volunteers,” Nancy says. “It’s really a wonderful organization!”

One small act of kindness - like a ride to an appointment - can truly change a life. And clients like Bill will tell you just what this means: “Without RideConnect’s help, I probably wouldn’t make most of my appointments. Volunteers always show up with grace and a smile.”
