The New York Unit of the Herb Society of America was founded in 1938 with the object of stimulating interest in the knowledge and use of herbs, and to develop and maintain educational and cultural projects relating to herbs. We have a rich and inspiring history: our wonderful location has facilitated connections with many outstanding horticultural institutions, and brought a wealth of accomplished members to our ranks.

Meet the Moderator: Jess Kravit, Founder of Exalted Alchemy

Join us at What’s the Tea? on May 7 at where Jess Kravit, Founder of Exalted Alchemy, will guide an evening of conversation exploring tea from root to cup.

A clinical herbalist and wellness practitioner, Jess brings a deeply holistic perspective rooted in herbalism, astrology, and energy healing. Through her brand, , she creates intentional, small-batch products designed to support moments of connection, balance, and everyday ritual—each one handcrafted with care in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Since founding Exalted Alchemy in 2019, Jess has expanded her creative vision to launch River Valley Guild, a collaborative creative community, and Dream Valley, an event production agency. Her work has been recognized by Hudson Valley Magazine, naming her one of the region’s most influential businesswomen, and she continues to play an active role in the nonprofit space, serving as National Marketing Chair for the Herb Society of America and on the advisory board for Hudson Valley Sustainable Fashion Week.

With her thoughtful, integrative approach, Jess will lead a dynamic discussion on the cultural, culinary, and wellness dimensions of tea.

Meet the Panel: Danielle Beaudette, Founder of The Cozy Tea Cart

Join us at What’s the Tea? on May 7 at as we explore the stories, traditions, and rituals that shape tea culture around the world. Danielle Beaudette, founder of , brings more than 25 years of experience and a deep passion for tea that extends far beyond the cup.

Through extensive travel across Asia, Danielle has built lasting relationships with tea growers, developing a rich understanding of tea from source to cup. She was among the first in the U.S. to earn the Specialty Tea Institute’s Certified Tea Specialist Level IV designation and continues to be a trusted voice in the tea community.

What began as a small home-based shop grew into a beloved destination in Brookline, New Hampshire—where tea, education, and connection come together. As The Cozy Tea Cart enters a new chapter in 2026, Danielle continues her mission through tastings, workshops, and thoughtfully curated experiences that bring people together through tea.

Since 2009, J Y and her husband James Hibler have been brewing small-batch kombucha in Upper Westchester, New York, using SCOBY cultures that trace back to their earliest beginnings. This week in the herb garden we tackled the Rosa rugosa.

We cut them back to about 12–18” from the ground, just above the first bud (the node), and cleared out any dead canes from the winter.

Good news if pruning feels intimidating… these roses are tough and very forgiving, so no need to overthink it.

Sunshine, dirt, and a good pair of loppers — pretty great way to start the day.

Meet the Panel: Kathleen McKenna Schoen, MS

Join us at What’s the Tea? on May 7 at , where leading voices in wellness and tea come together to explore the role of plants in everyday life. Among them is Kathleen McKenna Schoen, MS, who brings more than 30 years of experience in integrative nutrition and a deeply holistic perspective on health.

Holding a Master’s in Nutrition from New York Medical College and certification as a Clinical Nutrition Specialist, Kathleen began her career at New York Physicians, focusing on metabolic health, diabetes, and hypertension. She has long been an advocate for nutrition-forward living, contributing to initiatives that improve school food systems and promote farm-to-table programs.

She also co-founded ULIVjava alongside Martha Stewart—an innovative line of organic coffee infused with green tea and adaptogens, carried nationwide at Whole Foods Market.

Today, continues her work at the community level, supporting families through nutrition education and wellness programs, while also holding advanced certifications in integrative oncology and health optimization.
