Poi Dogs and Popoki is dedicated to providing nurturing support specifically for pet owners that need the most help in hopes that this will reduce the owners' financial burdens, reduce owner surrenders, reduce pet overpopulation, reduce the use of euthanasia, and improve the overall health and wellness of the animals and their ohana. Between food, water, shelter and veterinary care, caring for a pet can be an expensive endeavor. In fact, more than $500 per year is spent on pet care according to the ASPCA. Those that cannot afford to continue caring for their animals may face the difficult choice of surrendering their pet to the local animal control contractor. On the island of Oahu alone, 70% of all admitted animals are euthanized.
