Hauʻoli lā hānau, Pauline! 🌿🎉

Today we’re celebrating our co-founder and executive director, Pauline Sato, whose care for Hawaiʻi has brought people together through conservation and education for more than 30 years.

The seeds you’ve planted reach far beyond our nurseries, in the students discovering their connection to ʻāina, the volunteers returning to lend a hand, and the partnerships helping our communities grow.

Mahalo for your vision, persistence, and belief in what we can accomplish together. Our MLC ʻohana is grateful for the care you bring to this work and the people who make it possible.

Learning together, one laulau at a time! 🌿💚

From preparing the fillings to folding leaves and filling the steamer, everyone had a hand in bringing these bundles together. Gathering around food gives us space to share skills, learn from one another, and explore the connections between ʻāina, culture, and what we eat.

Join Mālama Learning Center and Kamehameha Schools for E Ulu Mau Ke Kaiāulu O Waiʻanae, an Arbor Day celebration in Nānākuli!

Explore “Navigating Our Future” through growing and caring for canoe plants, sharing knowledge, and connecting with our community.

Meet Aly, one of our Ola Nā Kini interns! 🌱

Through her internship with Mālama Learning Center, Aly has worked along side MLC staff, community, and schools. We are so grateful for her work and words about the experience!

“My experience so far as an Ola Nā Kini intern with Mālama Learning Center has shown me what change can start at a community level and how impact can happen when many hands come together. Working with volunteers, students, and among staff, it’s inspiring to see the drive we can all have to restore native forests. From the weeding, planting, sowing seeds, even hale building, I have been observing the intention and purpose of each action and how everything is in relation with one another.

My passion in ‘āina conservation and education continues to grow through listening to the mo‘olelo of the different sites we care for, becoming more familiar with the la‘au, and meeting the caring people that shape MLC.
I’m grateful to work in a space where I can deepen my connection and give back to the ‘āina and community. I look forward to continuing to learn and helping others foster love for these special places!

🌌 Stargazing Night
Wednesday, October 21, 2026 | 6–8 p.m.
Gather beneath the stars and learn about celestial navigation and Polynesian wayfinding.

🌱 Lā ʻOhana Day
Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
Bring the whole ʻohana for keiki sailing, Hānai Lāʻau plant adoption, and hands-on activities!

Both events are free and open to the public. Stay tuned for registration information at MalamaLearningCenter.org.

Laulima in action at Awāwalei! 🌱🤝

Mahalo nui to everyone who joined our community workday. Together, volunteers cleared invasive growth, tended the food forest, improved our gathering spaces, and learned more about the plants and relationships that make Awāwalei so special.

MLC was able to share practical ways our community can reduce coconut rhinoceros beetle breeding habitat and protect our island landscapes, while also giving out free resources to fight the spread.

Every pair of hands made a visible difference, but the greatest impact was the pilina built while working side by side. This is what mālama ʻāina looks like: showing up, learning together, and caring for place through action.

We’re grateful to our volunteers, community partners, interns, and staff for bringing your time, energy, and aloha. 💚
