This young ‘ou (Bulwer’s Petrel) transferred to us from Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project is a whole vibe. What a hairdo! Mahalo to Makawao Veterinary Clinic for working with our team to hold and care for the bird during the storm while flights were down.

Post-storm updates. So thankful for the community and for everyone working on the frontlines and behind the scenes. Feather and Fur Animal Hospital provides a critical service, allowing the continued drop-off of native birds despite also having to deal with power outages and provide service to their own clients. The Honolulu Zoo provides a location for our O‘ahu Clinic, we wouldn’t be on O‘ahu without them. Hui Manu o Kū has been answering Manu o Kū calls and reuniting uninjured youngsters with their families. Birds have been transported to us by our Wheels for Wildlife volunteers, community members, Hawaii DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) Conservation Resource (DOCARE) officers as well as response orgs including Hawai'i Marine Animal Response - HMAR. DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife biologists have also been helping coordinate responses to downed birds behind the scenes. Everyone has been doing all they can to help native birds after the storm. (If we accidentally left you off this list, it’s not because you’re unappreciated… it’s because our brains are currently running on adrenaline and nonperishable cookies) Mahalo to everyone, we are so grateful!!! 🙏🏻

After Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lala, you may encounter native birds that have been displaced, injured or grounded by severe weather. If you find a bird that needs help, call Hawai‘i Wildlife Center at 808-884-5000. Do not give the bird food or water. Using a towel, gently place it in a ventilated box and keep it somewhere dark, cool and quiet until it can be brought to an approved drop-off location.

HWC is currently experiencing intermittent phone outages. If you can’t reach us, please leave a message with your contact information and we’ll return your call as soon as possible.

On O‘ahu: HWC’s partner, Feather and Fur Animal Hospital is open 24 hours for native bird drop-off. The team at Hui Manu o Kū are also working hard to reunite uninjured Manu o Kū youngsters with their parents.

Please save and share so others know what to do if they encounter a native bird after the storm.

The cameras we have in the hospital help us get a clearer picture of a patient’s condition when they are not under the stress of handling (or even just from seeing us around). In the case of this with pneumonia, we are concerned about her labored breathing but it’s also encouraging to see her preen and eat. This patient is currently on oxygen and hanging in there like a trooper. 🦉

Some of you may have seen the recent post in one of the Hawai‘i Island-based Facebook groups about a downed ‘ua‘u kani (Wedge-tailed Shearwater) at Old Airport in Kona. Mahalo to everyone that shared our contact info with the finder! The bird has been secured and is currently in care at our Kapa‘au facility. If you find any more native seabirds downed around the island, please let us know. (808)884-5000.
