Today is Juneteenth! Today we celebrate Black freedom, resilience, and joy.

June 19, 1866 in Galveston, TX marked the end of chattel slavery. However, even after emancipation, there is still work to be done. Black communities still face economic, social, and health care disparities.

Today’s celebration is a reminder to continue to listen and learn from Black community members and leaders so that we continue to move forward and dismantle the barriers that keep Black communities from accessing equitable care.

Yesterday our We Are Wyandotte team gave a HEAT (Health, Equity, Action, Transformation) Report presentation to medical residents at KU Med.

Wyandotte County has consistently ranked last in the state of Kansas for health outcomes. The HEAT Report is a project that examines social and environmental factors that affect low health outcomes in Wyandotte County, including housing, income, and access to care.

It is important for care providers to understand the challenges our communities face in order to provide equitable care. By working collaboratively with care providers, we advocate and create awareness of healthcare solutions to work towards sustained improvement in our lives.

A group from our team went to Philadelphia, PA for one of our favorite conferences:
This was a chance for us to network, learn, and grow from other individuals and organizations who are doing boots on the ground work in organizing for a more equitable and just world.

We also had a wonderful time exploring the rich culture of Philadelphia!

Happy Friday!
What do we do with all of these car seat boxes before we recycle? We play! Even when we’re tired. 😴
We hope you get to sleep in this weekend! πŸ˜‰
