Last weekend, Youth Civic Challenge had the opportunity to work with the PlayMakers at Safe-Hub Philadelphia for a hands-on LEGO® Serious Play® workshop focused on youth leadership, creativity, and community change. 🧱🙌

Through building, sharing, and conversation, the PlayMakers explored their superpowers, their values, the things they care about in their communities, and the role they can play as changemakers.

We loved working with this group of young leaders and hearing their ideas, perspectives, and vision for their communities.💡👏

The average age of a lawmaker in the Connecticut General Assembly is about 53 years old. The two candidates running in the 40th House District don't even add up to that.

State Rep. Dan Gaiewski, the Democratic incumbent, is 25, making him the youngest sitting member in the General Assembly.

His Republican challenger, Isabelle Roode, is 17, an EMT and small business owner who launched her campaign during her senior year at Fitch High School.

"It’s obviously an anomaly," said Gary Rose, a political science professor at Sacred Heart University.

Frederick Douglass comes to Winsted. A powerful day of history and inspiration at the American Museum of Tort Law!

Thank you to Nathan M. Richardson for his amazing portrayal of Frederick Douglass, bringing one of America's greatest champions for justice to life. As part of our Youth Civic Challenge (YC²), students and community members explored Douglass's enduring message of courage, civic engagement, and the power of using your voice to make a difference.

⚡ Today, our Youth Civic Challenge students stepped inside the Smart Energy Living exhibit at the American Museum of Tort Law!

From exploring heat pumps and solar energy to learning about EV chargers, battery storage, and energy-saving technology, our students discovered how innovation, public policy, and community action come together to build a more sustainable future.
Civic leadership means understanding the issues that shape our communities—and today was a hands-on lesson in how informed citizens can make a real difference. 🌎💡

Today, Youth Civic Challenge students were honored to welcome Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas to the American Museum of Tort Law.

Secretary Thomas shared her journey in public service and encouraged students to lead with purpose, stay engaged in their communities, and never underestimate the impact of their voices. Her story served as a powerful reminder that leadership is built through service, perseverance, and a commitment to making a difference.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an inspiring leader and role model. Thank you, Secretary Thomas, for investing your time in the next generation of changemakers. Your words will stay with our students long after today’s conversation.

Another great Saturday with the PlayMakers at Safe-Hub Philadelphia! 🌟

After three YC² sessions focused on civic leadership, community, and changemaking, students are now beginning their summer project.

Using the YC² Civic Capacity Wheel, PlayMakers identified issues they care about and will spend the next few weeks documenting their community through photos, videos, and storytelling.
We're excited to see how their ideas turn into action this summer.

This past Saturday, May 9th, Safe-Hub Playmakers participated in the first of three workshop sessions focused on the history and future of Kensington.
A huge thank you to historian Walter Licht of the University of Pennsylvania for speaking with the students about the history of Kensington and the importance of reframing the narrative surrounding the community. His presentation inspired thoughtful conversations and a positive vision for the future.

Following the discussion, Playmakers created collages representing what they hope to see in the future of Kensington, centered around community, opportunity, creativity, and hope.

Thank you, Walter Licht, for being part of this experience and helping inspire the next generation of civic leaders.

YC² spent the weekend in Philadelphia with the incredible team at Safe-Hub Philadelphia in Kensington. Together with their PlayMakers and staff, we explored youth leadership through creativity, collaboration, and big ideas for community change.

From building out community visions with LEGO to sharing project ideas and empowering young leaders, the experience reminded us how powerful it is when young people come together to imagine what their communities can become.

Grateful to the Safe-Hub team and PlayMakers for an inspiring weekend of learning, leadership, and collaboration.⭐️♥️

⭐️ Meet a young leader focused on civic education and engagement, Rep. Valerie McDonnell ⭐️

Representative Valerie McDonnell joins YC² to share how a simple question in high school shaped her path to public office. After noticing civics wasn’t being taught in her school, she began campaigning for office at 17 and was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives at 18. Today, she continues to champion education and youth engagement, encouraging young people to stay curious, show up in their communities, and believe in their ability to lead.

Representative Daniel Pae joins YC² to share how a commitment to community shaped his path to public office. From helping establish a campus food pantry that continues to serve thousands to serving his local community in elected office, his leadership has always centered on impact. At just 23, he stepped into the Oklahoma House committed to listening closely, leading with compassion, and remembering that our disagreement should never erase our shared humanity.
