Newhouse Shelter Newhouse shatters the barriers that feed the cycle of abuse and partners with survivors to achieve safety, self-sufficiency, and whole-person healing.

Newhouse is the catalyst for domestic violence survivors to rise through the impacts of their trauma, by providing an ecosystem of transformative services that lead to safety, self-sufficiency, and whole-person healing. We are Kansas City's oldest domestic violence shelter, serving Kansas City for more than 50 years since 1971. We offer safe shelter, therapy, legal advocacy, nourishing meals, childcare, early learning, job training, substance dependency support, support with transitional housing, and so much more. Newhouse proudly supports courageous women, children and men who are facing domestic violence on their journey towards whole-person healing. We’re proud to celebrate Newhouse Board Member Dr. Jennifer Keller, Associate Chief Operating Officer of Behavioral Health at University Health KC, for her continued advocacy for mental health in our community.

In a recent KCUR 89.3 interview, Dr. Keller speaks about rising su***de rates among children and the need for adults to take warning signs seriously. We’re grateful to have leaders like Jennifer championing the well-being of our community and helping bring critical mental health issues into the conversation.

What a beautiful night! Our friends and generous supporters of survivors at Newhouse gathered at our Patrons Party to rally hope for the upcoming Imagine a Day Gala on November 7. Guests enjoyed live music by Isabel Sierra and Aiden Jensen, learned about our next chapter, and were inspired by survivors.

As Newhouse marks 55 years of standing with survivors, we’re especially grateful for the people who have helped carry this work forward. Their generosity makes it possible to imagine a future where every survivor can experience safety, hope and the freedom to build a life on their own terms.

Last week, Newhouse Clinical Advisor Dr. Grey Endres was the keynote speaker at the 30th Annual Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism Breakfast, joining others in reflecting on the work of recognizing bias, challenging inequity, and creating more just communities.

For survivors, racism and other systemic inequities can create additional barriers to housing, healthcare, economic stability, legal support and other resources that can make safety and healing possible.

We’re proud to have Dr. Grey represent Newhouse at such an important gathering and to see him lend his voice to a conversation that continues to matter deeply.

Pickleball, great people, and a $9,000 gift to Newhouse — we’d call that a pretty great day! 😎💜☀

We were honored to be one of two nonprofit clients selected to benefit from Gallagher’s pickleball fundraiser at Chicken-N-Pickle last week. Our team had a blast joining in the fun, and we were so grateful to receive a $9,000 check to support survivors. This gift helps make life-saving services possible, from safe housing and therapy to legal advocacy, childcare, and more.

Congratulations to MOCSA on the grand opening of your beautiful new facility! 🥳 We were honored to celebrate this incredible organization and fellow agency working to end violence in our community. Today’s celebration brought together many community partners and leaders, including Senator Barbara Anne Washington, Kenneth Bacchus, and U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II, who joined Newhouse President + CEO Courtney Lea Thomas for a few photos.
