At this year's Ability Luncheon, we were honored to share Bentley's story. After a tornado struck while he was traveling with his family, debris from a nearby building hit their vehicle, causing Bentley to sustain a traumatic brain injury.

With determination, family support, and comprehensive rehabilitation at Ability KC, Bentley made incredible strides in his recovery, regaining independence and reaching new milestones.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to honor the talents, contributions, and achievements of individuals with disabilities and to champion workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

At Ability KC, we believe employment can be a powerful pathway to independence, confidence, and connection. Through our employment services and community partnerships, we work alongside individuals with disabilities to help remove barriers and expand access to meaningful career opportunities.

Last Friday, Ability KC hosted our 7th Annual Professional Development Day, bringing staff together for a day of learning, reflection, and connection.

Through sessions focused on personal and professional development, communication, wellbeing, financial wellness, and healthcare operations, staff gained valuable insights to support their work and continued growth.

Ability KC was proud to host the MO Better Foundation TechMO Fest recently, bringing together individuals with disabilities, families, caregivers, professionals, students, and community partners for an evening of innovation, connection, and discovery.

Attendees explored assistive technology firsthand, learned from technology users and advocates like Pierre Paul, and experienced how adaptive tools can support greater independence, creativity, and access in everyday life. From adaptive gaming and smart home solutions to eye-gaze and sip-and-blow technology, the event highlighted the many ways innovation can help people pursue their goals and engage more fully in the activities that matter most.

Thank you to MO Better Foundation, the exhibitors, partners, and everyone who joined us for this inspiring evening of learning and connection. Together, we're expanding awareness of what's possible through assistive technology and creating a more accessible future for all.

As comes to a close, we're reflecting on the strength, determination, and progress of individuals navigating life after injury.

At this year's Ability Luncheon, we had the privilege of sharing Maci's story. After a spinal cord injury, Maci came to Ability KC with a goal of returning to the nursing profession she loved. Through specialized rehabilitation services and support from our Return to Work Navigator, she not only returned to work as a nurse but also had the opportunity to join Ability KC's team doing what she loved.

We're proud to support individuals like Maci as they pursue meaningful goals, regain independence, and discover new opportunities along the way.

This , we’re proud to share stories of determination, progress, and innovative rehabilitation.

Following a serious car accident, Jacob began rebuilding strength and independence through Ability KC’s Day program, exercise groups, and specialized therapies. He’s worked toward meaningful goals including improving hand function, building upper‑body strength, exploring adaptive gaming, and preparing for future driving. Part of his therapy has included utilizing ARC EX, a spinal cord stimulation system designed to support recovery for individuals with cervical spinal cord injuries. ARC EX delivers targeted electrical pulses through the skin to help improve hand and arm strength and sensation, enhancing the work he’s already doing in therapy.

With consistent hard work and support from his expert therapy team, Jacob continues making steady gains in strength, balance, and daily independence. His journey shows what’s possible when personal goals, skilled therapy, and emerging technology come together to expand opportunity and quality of life.
