Ability KC had an amazing time participating in the Midwest Ability Summit event recently! It was an honor for some of our staff members to volunteer, present, and connect with participants out in the community. Also, a special shoutout to one of our incredible occupational therapists, Erin, who has been the primary coordinator of this event for the past 15 years. Events like these are crucial for connecting individuals with disabilities, their families, and professionals with valuable resources and opportunities and we’re proud to be a part of it!

Recently, Ability KC teamed up with Freedom Concepts for another joyful Bike Rodeo event! Families from our Pediatric and Adolescent Medical Rehabilitation Program joined us for adaptive bike sizing and evaluations, with support from Freedom Concepts helping many children receive a bike uniquely built for their needs. These adaptive bikes create meaningful opportunities for inclusion, empowering kids to ride confidently alongside siblings and friends. 💚🚲

This summer, a talented group of UMKC Science and Engineering students partnered with Ability KC’s Assistive Technology team to take on an exciting challenge: developing three innovative apps that will transform how we deliver care. Their work focused on advancing adaptive gaming, streamlining QuadStick profile creation, and improving scanning access for computer use. These tools will strengthen efficiency, expand accessibility, and enhance the patient experience and rehabilitation in meaningful ways.

Additionally, these solutions will help patients engage more fully in therapy, access technology with greater independence, and experience care that’s more responsive to their individual needs.

Occupational therapist, Riley Hanline, who leads our Adaptive Gaming program, shared, “These tools help people play the games they want to play, and make it easier for our staff and clinicians to support gaming as therapy.”

A huge thank you to this group and UMKC for their creativity, dedication, and partnership. We’re grateful for their vision, and excited for what these tools will unlock for our community.

Recently, Ability KC welcomed residents from the University of Kansas School of Medicine’s Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program for a tour of our facilities. Their visit offered meaningful insight into how our services support individuals throughout rehabilitation, and many shared how valuable it was to see our work in action. We appreciated the thoughtful conversations and their interest in learning more about resources available in our community, as well as the opportunity to share the work happening across Ability KC.

Yesterday we welcomed a group from NorthPoint Development for a tour and to drop off the Champion Cheer Kits their team thoughtfully assembled as part of our Corporate Champion Impact Initiative.
