It’s Food Waste Prevention Week, Kansas City!

We're celebrating with KC Can Compost and what happens when communities make food waste prevention and composting part of everyday life.

Together, KC Can Compost members, partners, volunteers, and communities have helped divert more than 10.5 million pounds of organic material from the landfill.

Food waste is a big problem.
But we make it easy for you to be part of the solution.

We’re on a mission to educate and empower Kansas Citians to upcycle their food scraps, reduce food waste, and strengthen the health of our community.

We hope everyone was able to wish Wilma a Happy Birthday this weekend! Turning 88 is no small feat! We're sure one of her wishes was for an unlimited supply of earthworms. But we bet she was also thinking of her wild friends outside and hoping they stay safe.
You may have already started to see turtles crossing roads, as their journey back to their brumation site is prompted by shorter day length and cooler end of summer temps. This can be a very dangerous trek! You can help them out by assisting with their safe passage. As long as they seem uninjured, place them on the other side of the road in the grass in the direction where they were traveling. If you see any injuries, please get them to the appropriate wildlife rescue. The one thing not to do is keep them as pets. We need all our healthy wild turtles to stay outside as this is the only way to ensure they can reproduce and contribute to the overall turtle population.

If you are interested in adopting an unreleasable turtle as a pet, please call the nature center and we can let you know about some local turtle rescues that are looking for some great homes!
Above is one of our last box turtles to leave the hospital from the Spring intakes. She had a very bad fracture over her right shoulder, but she healed up great and is headed back home! Thank you to all those that stop in the road to save these fascinating creatures 🐢

We want to thank all the folks that came out and made our 4th annual Fox Hollow Fest a success, despite the weather!

Participants enjoyed tree climbing, making flower presses, nature journals, and seed balls, learning how to container garden with natives, bird hikes, native plant sale, raffle, chatting up local partner organizations and b**r garden! We displayed an inaugural swap and shop, which went over really well. And debuted new music for the Fest, The Crafts Folk. Such a fun band!!

Like all events, this could not have been accomplished without an amazing VOLUNTEER CREW! They worked hard to set up, break down and engage with participants all with soggy feet and a smile on their faces 🙂

RAIN OR SHINE!!

Fox Hollow Fest is Just around the corner! Come join us on Sunday, June 7th from 11 - 3 PM at Lakeside Nature Center to help raise money for our trail! It will be a day of fun outside with lots of opportunities for all to participate and enjoy.

Free Events: swap and shop, take home crafts, bird hikes, visiting partner booths and live music!

For purchase: native plants, raffle, tree climbing demo, b**r garden and pizza truck

If you would like to donate garden or outdoor gear to our swap and shop, you can either bring the day of or drop off at the center all next week.
