Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW

Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW Across America, the initials VFW are a familiar sight. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.
(14118)

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United S

tates. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000.

We’re stronger together 🤝 Last month, we joined our friends from Humana , USAA, and of America for the fifth annual , assembling thousands of hygiene kits to support veterans and individuals experiencing homelessness in communities across Florida, Texas and Tennessee.

More than just supplies, these kits help provide comfort, resources and support to those who need it most.

Education can open doors to new opportunities and new missions. For Army veteran Sam George, it's a chance to help fellow veterans battling addiction reclaim their futures. With support from the VFW's "Sport Clips Haircuts Help A Hero Scholarship," he's turning his personal journey into a profession dedicated to helping veterans heal and find hope.

Army veteran Sam George shares how overcoming addiction and receiving the VFW’s "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" allowed him to earn a degree in addiction studies to help his fellow veterans.

🚨 Action Alert

They said they wouldn't cut veterans' benefits.

The Take Care of America's Veterans Act does exactly that.

$57 billion. 1.5 million veterans. Tinnitus. Sleep apnea. Conditions earned in combat. Stripped from future veterans to pay for other veterans' benefits.

VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore: "A grateful nation pays its debts to veterans; it does not send them the invoice."

This community has a code. We don't eat our own.

The VFW supports the full, clean version of the Major Richard Star Act. What we don't support is paying for it by reducing earned disability compensation for other veterans.

“We see this proposed cut as another way to try to get after something that some people think is rated too high. Anybody who’s on active duty now, anybody who was injured in Kuwait from Iranian drones, anyone working on a flight line or on an aircraft carrier right now would be subject to it when they get out of the military.” - VFW Washington Office Executive Director Ryan Gallucci

The proposal would fund combat veteran disability and retirement pay while changing disability ratings for sleep apnea and tinnitus.

Congress is trying to back veterans into a corner and take away benefits they already earned through service.

Veterans’ benefits are not handouts and they’re not there to balance the budget.

Tell Congress to back off Veterans earned benefits and Honor the Contract.

Beginning Aug. 1, 2026, the VA Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA or Chapter 35) program will no longer cover high school coursework, GED preparation, tutoring or academic remediation. This change as required by Public Law 117–328 limits DEA to post-secondary education.

Students enrolled before Aug. 1 may finish their current term, but no additional secondary-level terms will be covered. VA announced it is notifying affected beneficiaries and will provide guidance to schools. Get the details here:

A change in public law discontinues DEA benefits for secondary education for any program starting on or after Aug. 1, 2026.
