After many years as an entrepreneur, Julie Smith sold her restaurant, started working at UMKC for the employee tuition discount, earned her MBA, and found a passion for helping others pursue their educational and career goals.

As Assistant Director of Graduate Recruitment at the UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management, Julie helps people realize their dreams of advancing their careers or starting their own business. Her favorite part of the job is seeing the potential in someone before they see it themselves.

✨ Member Spotlight: Morgana Wilborn!

As a member of our Emerging Leaders Class of 2026, Morgana is strengthening her leadership while serving as Associate Artistic Director at Kansas City Repertory Theatre. As the lead producer on every production, she brings artists together to bring a playwright's words to life and create meaningful experiences for the Kansas City community.

Morgana joined Emerging Leaders to deepen her connection to Kansas City, continue growing as a leader, and learn alongside an inspiring community of women.

We're proud to partner with Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri and UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management for the inaugural Midwest Teen Leadership Summit on August 8!

This one-day experience is designed to help high school Seniors and Ambassadors build confidence, strengthen their leadership skills, and connect with inspiring mentors and peers.

"Communication is not one-size-fits-all." 💬

The final session of Executive-Level Communication for Women Ready to Level Up, Match the Message to the Moment, wrapped up the series with a look at how communication styles, conversation types, and cultural and social factors influence how our messages are received.

Led by Sydney Parriott, MA, CCC-SLP, MBA, founder of Speak Like a Professional, the session gave participants the chance to practice adapting their content, tone, and delivery to better connect with different audiences.

After more than 40 years as a Central Exchange member, that's still what keeps Mary coming back!

As the principal of her own management consulting firm, Mary has spent more than 25 years helping people and organizations grow. She also spent 26 years writing a business column for The Kansas City Star and is now working on her second book.

For Mary, Central Exchange is a place where women of every generation come together to learn, connect, and inspire one another. We're so grateful to have her in our community. 💛

✨ Member Spotlight: Meet Mariah Chrans!

A Central Exchange member for the past three years and part of our Emerging Leaders Class of 2026, Mariah recently stepped into her new role as Executive Director of the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, an organization dedicated to advancing health equity across our community.

When asked what she loves most about her work, her answer is simple: making sure dignity and joy are always at the forefront. It's a perspective that guides her leadership and inspires lasting system change.

We're grateful to have Mariah as part of the Central Exchange community and can't wait to see all she'll accomplish!
