Heart of America Aquarium Society (HAAS) We are a collection of aquarium enthusiasts in and around the Kansas City Metropolitan area. Our regular meetings are held beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Heart of America Aquarium Society of Kansas City is a not-for-profit hobby and recreational organization dedicated to the advancement and/or dissemination of information relating to all aspects of the biology of aquarium and pond-related fauna and flora, with particular reference to their maintenance and propagation in captivity. on the second Saturday of each month at the following location:

After weeks of getting everything ready, HAAS KC Aqua Swap 2: Aquatic Swapaloo is finally here!

We've got an awesome group of local breeders, growers, and hobbyists setting up tomorrow, including:

Between everyone, you'll find, medaka, high-end guppies, shrimp, angelfish, cichlids, Corydoras, swordtails, mollies, plecos (lots of plecos 😅), aquatic plants, floating plants, driftwood, aquarium equipment, 3D-printed aquarium accessories, fish food, and plenty more.

One of my favorite parts about these swaps is walking the room. Every table has something different, and I always end up finding something I wasn't planning on bringing home. 😅

Whether you're looking for your next breeding project, stocking a new aquarium, or just want to spend a few hours talking fish with other hobbyists, we'd love to have you stop by.

🐟 Soooo... about yesterday’s Vendor Spotlight. 😅

Work got in the way and apparently none of the fish volunteered to cover social media for me, so we missed a day.

That just means you get extra vendors today!

First up, Synoman Aquatics will be joining us Saturday with catfish, cichlids, and angelfish. If any of those are your thing, you know which table to find.

We’ve also got Beards & Scales bringing Celestial Pearl Danios, red root floaters, tropical fish, and plants. Definitely one to check out if you’ve got a planted tank or have been looking for some CPDs.

Julian Aquatics will be there too with medaka, plants, and aquarium equipment. A little livestock, a little greenery, and probably some fishroom stuff that needs a new home.

And I almost forgot Trippy Aquatics! They’re bringing quite the mix: Hifin Swordtails, mollies, shrimp, tetras, plecos, and several varieties of high-end guppies, with multiple varieties of just about everything they’re bringing.

There. I think we're officially caught up now. 😂

And somehow, we STILL haven't shown you everything that'll be in the room Saturday.

We’re another day closer to HAAS KC Aqua Swap #2, so let’s take a look at two more tables you’ll find this Saturday!

Hatfield Hatchery (Chris Hatfield) is bringing a nice mix of freshwater favorites, including African cichlids, angelfish, plecos, Corydoras, bichirs, and Electric Blue Acaras. If your tanks lean toward the bigger and bolder side of the hobby, this is definitely a table to check out. 👀

We’ll also have Yellow Tang Aquatics joining us with Bristlenose plecos, L268 plecos, plants, Mopani wood, and aquarium equipment. So whether you’re looking for livestock or something for the tank itself, give their table a look too.

And we’re still not done! These are just two more of the breeders, fishrooms, and hobbyists filling the room Saturday.

🦎🐟 It’s officially Aqua Swap week!

We’re down to the final few days before HAAS KC Aqua Swap 2: Aquatic Swapaloo , so this week we’re showing off more of the vendors and hobbyists you’ll find at the swap!

Today we’ve got Shooters Fishroom, and if you’re a pleco person... this could be a dangerous table. 👀

They’re bringing a pretty wild selection, including L46, L66, L136B, L236 Super White and Super Yellow, L267, L333, L397, L398, L399, L411, L494, L519 and more. They’ll also have Blue Eye Lemon Longfin, Super Red and Snow White bristlenose, Corydoras, Synodontis petricola, Boesemani rainbows, African cichlids, proven pleco pairs and trios, and some of the foods they use in their own fishroom.

We’ll also have J&K’s Fishroom joining us with plecos, guppies, shrimp, snails, Corydoras, and plants. A little bit of everything, which is exactly the kind of table I end up spending way too much time looking through. 👀

And these are only two of the vendors setting up Saturday. We’ve got plenty more to show you as we count down to the swap!

Quick update from our earlier post: Unfortunately, Mak’s A-Lotls is no longer able to join us this Saturday. We’ll miss having them at the swap and hopefully catch them at another event!

If you've been thinking about getting a table at HAAS KC Aqua Swap 2: Aquatic Swapaloo, this is your reminder... this is the last week to register!

Half the fun of an Aqua Swap is never knowing what you'll discover on the next table.

😅 Show Me Monday... just a little later than planned.

I spent most of today doing water changes, and before I knew it, Monday was almost over. Better late than never!

You can tell a lot about an aquarist by their fish room... and Hobert Goles is full of ideas.

This week we're showing off a few things he's been working on, including his breeding setup, algae-covered rocks for grazing fish and shrimp, and a DIY water polisher he built himself. It's the kind of setup where you can tell someone enjoys experimenting just as much as keeping fish.

If you're planning on coming to HAAS KC Aqua Swap 2: Aquatic Swapaloo, make sure you stop by and say hi. Hobert will have plenty of aquarium gear with him, including what he likes to call "giveaway-priced" equipment. If you're looking for a bargain, or just enjoy talking shop with another hobbyist, you'll definitely want to check out his table.

One of the vendors joining us for HAAS KC Aqua Swap 2: Aquatic Swapaloo is Sarah from Nerdbuckle Aquatics, and if you've been around HAAS for a while, you already know why that's dangerous for your wallet.

Sarah has become well known around the club for the quality of the shrimp she brings, and this year she's not stopping there. She'll also have guppies, endlers, Tiger Limia, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Pygmy and Panda Corydoras, plus plants.

She's also one of our HAAS BAP breeders, so you're supporting a local hobbyist who's been growing and breeding fish right here in our club.

📸 Tank Shot Tuesday!

Some fish don't need bright colors to stand out.

This week's Tank Shot Tuesday comes from longtime HAAS member Jeff McHenry, featuring his Indian Glass Fish (Parambassis ranga) alongside his Gudgeons.

Jeff shared a cool bit of history with us:
"The Indian Glass Fish was my 'GloFish' back in the day. They used to inject them with fluorescent dyes, which often weakened the fish and led to poor outcomes. Thankfully, these fish are naturally beautiful without the artificial colors. The males develop subtle coloration, have great personalities, and will even spar with one another, so giving them plenty of space is important."

It's a great reminder that sometimes the natural beauty of a fish is better than anything we can add.

Jeff will also have a table at HAAS KC Aqua Swap 2: Aquatic Swapaloo, where he'll be bringing fish, plants, and aquarium equipment, so be sure to stop by and say hello!
