Lou Holland moved to Kansas City from New York in 1902 to work in printing. By 1925, he was president of the Chamber of Commerce and convinced that this city's future depended on airplanes.

Holland played a key role in persuading Transcontinental Air Transport – later TWA – to put its headquarters here. In 1929, TAT's first coast-to-coast service ran through Kansas City. earning him the title of Father of Kansas City Aviation.

The old TWA headquarters on Baltimore Ave has been Barkley's home since 2006, and they're moving on to a new chapter. The Moonliner on the roof isn't going anywhere, though. Thanks to the building's federal historic tax credit status, it'll keep holding down the Crossroads skyline like it has since 1956. 🙌

Meet “Ellie,” one of the most significant aircraft in the TWA Museum collection.

Built in 1937, this Lockheed 12A Electra Junior was owned by TWA from 1940–1945. Rather than carrying paying passengers, Ellie served as an executive transport and a “flying laboratory,” helping TWA conduct research into high-altitude flying, de-icing, static discharge, and more.

And she had some pretty remarkable pilots behind the controls.

Howard Hughes, TWA founding President Jack Frye, and Vice President Paul Richter all piloted Ellie during her years with the airline.

Decades later, Ellie found her way to Paul Richter’s daughter, Ruth Holden, who remembered flying aboard the aircraft with her father as a young girl. Ruth purchased Ellie in 2005, restored her to her original TWA colors, and helped preserve this incredible piece of aviation history.

In 2019, the TWA Museum proudly purchased Ellie from Ruth, bringing her story full circle.

Today, Ellie is back home in the same hangar she occupied more than 75 years ago.

The Moonliner II was moved across the airfield and set down at our museum one year ago today. Thirty-two and a half feet of 1956 rocket, built for the roof of TWA's headquarters downtown, taken down in 1961, and out of public view for decades.

Thank you to Dan Viets of Columbia, Missouri, who owns the Moonliner II and so graciously partnered with us to restore the rocket and put it on view here at the museum.

In 1968, the TWA launched "Foreign Accent" flights, four international routes reimagined as themed experiences. Every route got its own meal, its own menu printed in the local language, its own magazines, and a hostess dressed for the destination. Rome got a Roman toga. And every one of those outfits was made of paper.

It was one of the biggest single promotions the industry had run. Crew carried tape with them, because paper and a full working shift were not always compatible.
