Since 2015, the Outreach Development Program team in Malawi has helped activate local resources from within the community to address community issues and achieve impactful results. 13 community-based organizations have been able to reimagine their communities with educational resources, health initiatives, agricultural support and food security. We are proud of the Outreach Malawi team and excited to share these milestones alongside communities that are proving every day that sustainable change is possible.

Outreach facilitators are preparing communities with the tools, knowledge, and leadership to not only solve their challenges today, but far into the future. By prioritizing, listening, and local collaboration, they support the infrastructure for independence. Communities can then begin to turn their hopes into reality and envision the potential for themselves and their community.

Community-led development invests in a process rather than a one-time solution. Success in community development isn’t reaching a destination. It’s ensuring long-term sustainability. With every completed project, the community learns new skills and steps into the next phase of growth by continually evaluating results, diagnosing the next root cause, and adapting the strategy. When a community owns the process, they own the outcomes.

500 million.

500 million women and girls worldwide lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for hygiene management. Because of this, 1 in 5 girls miss up to one week of school every month. That leaves them a year behind for each four years of education. Natural biology becomes a barrier to education, economic opportunity, and basic dignity. But community-led development is changing the narrative from the inside out.

In India and Malawi, communities are dismantling these taboos. From adolescent girls organizing subsidized sanitary pad distribution to local women running peer-to-peer health training—and even bringing men and boys into the conversation.

In Lapse, Nepal the team has been focusing on strengthening livelihoods and income generation. The community participated in three activities over the last month.

A detergent production training was conducted with a total of 50 participants. The session covered the required materials, production process, cost and profit calculations, and basic marketing practices.

In coordination with the Municipal Livestock Department, 90 goats received free vaccinations. This was an important step in improving livestock health and reducing disease risks for farmers. The veterinary technician also confirmed a follow-up visit planned for the next round of vaccinations for additional livestock.

Additionally, an agriculture project being developed in partnership with Lele Community Development Center and Good Neighbors International officially started. The first initiative included distributing three types of vegetable seeds; cucumber, bitter gourd, and pumpkin to 16 participants. Transformation is possible from community participation and resource institutions that work in partnership to provide development opportunities.

Community-led development works best when it is local 🌍

Program partners are a large piece of the Outreach development process. They are legally established, independent organizations located directly inside the countries where we work. They aren’t outside visitors; they’re local experts who possess the deep cultural fluency, legal understanding, and professional expertise required to make change stick. Our program partners create connections to resources and support communities in the creation of their own solutions.

Today, irrigation only covers 3-4% of the cultivated land in Malawi and is a major factor in food insecurity across the country. In Chilowamatambe, 415 people in the community group of Kachere depend almost entirely on rain-fed farming. The community group came together to address the issue through a mobile solar-powered irrigation system. The community members purchased the irrigation system, marking a significant milestone in the project's implementation.

The project has a dual focus on irrigation farming and value-added food processing, specifically the production of tomato sauce to reduce post-harvest losses and to reduce market losses from last season's low income. By the end of all community-based training, 45 farmers will know how to operate the pump for crop production.

"We want the quality of these toilets in shared settings to be really high... We want people to feel safe. We want them to feel as though their privacy and their dignity is being respected and preserved."

Episode 2 of the Beyond Poverty Podcast is LIVE! Host Elene Cloete welcomes Anoop Jain and Anvesh Badamikar from Sanitation and Health Rights India to discuss the intersection of public health, social justice, and political prioritization.
